In Australia there is a serious issue concerning our water pollution. In Australia we have the most famous coral ecosystem in the world which has started to die due to climate change and pollution.
Australian waters are home to 1,500 different species of fish, six species of sea turtle, 30 different species of whale, and hundreds more different marine animals that we need to protect.
If no approach is taken to tackle water pollution in Australia our coral reef will have completely died and over half of the animal will have gone extinct.
Pros:
- This will bring in community engagement which will make it easier to spread the idea around
- The more people that are involved the more money raised which ultimately means more sea bins
Cons:
- It will take time to get people on board
- It will take alot of organisation, and if somethinggoes wrong on the day like weather it would be hard to rescedule
The sea bin is an amazing invention that cleans up plastic and rubbish from the ocean without human aid. but these sea bins can be expensive and would need funding to we we think it would be smart to conduct a fun run. One way of raising awareness is a fun run where people get sponsors and they run to raise money for the cause.
Example
Challenge 1: No plastic bags use cloth
Challenge 2: Pick up a bag of rubbish
Challenge 3: don't buy bagged food
Challenge 4: using boxes instead of plastic bags while shopping
Challenge 5: recycle as much as possible to re use plastics when necessary
Challenge 6: compost as much waste as you can instead of bagging and binning
Challenge 7: do not use plastic straws
The internet is a huge part of people lives and for some people social media can be their only way of communicating with other people. So sparking this very important environmental issue on social media we could gain lots of publicity and support very quickly.
The main idea we have for solution is:
We would start the count down a month before the week long challenge and for each day people have to either cut something different out or do something good.
Pros: this gives people time to get ready for the challenge
Cons: people could fail one day and lose interest
Our design is a combination of a ocean cleanup array and a seas bin. This device is better suited for smaller water ways. Some positives of this device is that it helps with smaller parts of water ways and is reusable. Some negatives include that the device would be costly (pricing around a couple thousand dollars) and if the tide changes rubbish will miss the sea bin. For cleaning bigger oceans we could build a bigger sea bin or create a robot that automatically collects the rubbish and put them in large containers.
We would locate them around the most popular bay areas in Victoria, such as Mordialloc bay, Seaford, mornington beach, Chelsea and St Kilda beach
