European Colonisation of North America

The Europeans came to North America in 1492, and when Christopher Columbus saw that the Americans had vast valleys and mineral sources of gold and silver that the Europeans sought, they naturally started to take over and colonize the continent.

Treaty of Tordesillas

The Treaty of Tordesillas divided North America into land, resources, and even people. The treaty gave Spain control of the Americas, except for modern-day Brazil.

Slave Triangle

The Slave Triangle was composed of three parts: first, bringing slaves across the Atlantic, and some were killed at sea. Secondly, raw goods like sugar and tobacco, manufactured by slaves, would be transported to Europe. Finally, the raw goods would be manufactured into rums, and textiles would be shipped to Africa, continuing the chain.

The Hudson's Bay Company is a Canadian retail business group. It began as a fur trading company and grew to become Canada's largest and oldest corporation.

Seven Years War Begins

The Seven Years' War began when France and Britain were fighting over the Americas. 150 years later, France started the Seven Years' War after tensions were high in the Ohio River.

The Seven Years War Ends

The French eventually surrendered in Montreal, and the British transported French soldiers back to France. The treaty gave up all of France's possessions and turned France’s massive empire in Canada into two tiny irrelevant islands (Saint Pierre & Miquelon)

Spinning Jenny is Invented

The Spinning Jenny was created in 1764 by James Hargreaves. The spinning jenny was a machine to improve the cotton industry further and it allowed spinners to spin 8 different threads at once.

The Stamp Act is Passed

The Stamp Act was passed in 1765. It was a tax on items that were sold and purchased in the 13 colonies; the act affected items like newspapers, almanacs, pamphlets, broadsides, legal documents, dice, and playing cards. The act was later abolished on March 18, 1766, one measly year after it was instated.

The Boston Tea Party took place in 1773 when many people snuck aboard British ships and dumped thousands of dollars worth of tea into Boston Harbour. The Boston Tea Party was one of the most important events in American history that led up to the American Revolution.

Declaration of Independance is signed

The United States introduced a bill of rights that every single American citizen had rights to, and those rights can never be taken away. Some of the rights listed in the declarations include life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

North West Company is Created

The North West Company was a fur trading business headquartered in Montreal from 1779 to 1821. It competed with increasing success against the Hudson's Bay Company. The NWC participated in the monopoly of furs around Lake Athabasca.

The First Facotry Act is Placed

The first factory act was an act placed by parliament to improve the lives of the workers inside of factories and mines. This act also prevented children under the age of 9 from working inside factories. These acts also put placements on the number of hours one can work.

The Battle of Tippecanoe

The Battle of Tippecanoe was a battle fought on November 7th, 1811, between the Americans and Native leaders Tecumseh and Tenskwatawa. The Americans ultimately won, but it was the outcome of Tecumseh and Tenskwatawa's dreams of a First Nations confederacy.

The Americans win the war of 1812

The war tired everyone out, including the British, Americans, and even First Nations peoples. They all had no desire to continue with the war, so the war was won by the Americans due to their control of the sea.

Treaty of Ghent is enacted

The Treaty of Ghent took place in Belgium and took four months to agree upon with the British and the Americans. The Treaty restored relations to pre-war times, and borders were to be discussed at a later date.

Canadian Industrial Revolution Begins

Canadian Industrial Revolution Begins in 1840 and was seated around the Saint Lawrence River due to easy transportation and cheap labour in the area.

Irish Potato Famine

Many people were very poor in Ireland and lots of them had to eat only potatoes to survive. Many landowners who were predominantly British grew cash crops which were crops that were sent to England & Europe.

Viola Desmond Goes to Jail

Viola Desmond goes to jail for protesting against racism in a movie theatre. Viola Desmond was sitting in a movie theatre when she sat in the white section of the theatre. She was kicked out and fined over 400 dollars in today's money.
