Cement is a powdery substance made with calcined lime and clay. It is mixed with water to form mortar, and can also be mixed with sand, gravel and water to form concrete.
A man named Joseph Aspdin invented cement by burning finely ground chalk and clay in a kiln, until the carbon dioxide was removed.

Cement was invented in 1824 in Portland, England.
When Was It Invented?
Cement is a main ingredient of concrete, which is used to make sidewalks, buildings, and foundation for houses. It is also used to make mortar, a paste that helps bind certain things together, such as stones and bricks. This caught on and became popular, because it made building/fixing things a whole lot easier.
-Has helped to make building homes alot easier
- Is a main ingredient in concrete
- Used to build pillars/decks which help keep houses and buildings stable
- Is also an ingredient in mortar, which makes fixing and binding things a lot easier
-Cement dust contains high levels of Crystalliane Silica, which is toxic
- Concrete causes damage to the most fertile layer of the earth, the topsoil
- Contact with wet cement can do serious damage to skin
I think cement is a good thing, because it has helped making building a lot easier, which means the buildings are safer and less likely to fall down/burn down, where as if they were made of wood, they could catch fire or rot or wear down a lot easier.
