Measuring Strength

Measuring Strength

Three Factors in Measuring Strength:

1. Budget

2. Technologies

3. Strategy

Budget

Military Expenditure as % of GDP: 3.2%

Military Expenditure as % of Government Spending: 9%

Total Military Expenditure: $648,799,273,000

Implications

Analysis

The United States has the largest economy in the world allowing them to keep their percentage outputs of military spending at a reasonable level while maintaining a budget more than double the next country. The size of the military budget shows the influence the US military has on the government. This ability to gain budget appropriation is a major strength of the US Military.

Analysis

Summary of US technological capabilities

The US Military has both quantity and quality when it comes to technology. While it may not be number one in the amount of ships or nuclear warheads it still has plenty of capacity that is often times more advanced the the opposition. Of course, the GFI is not a perfect measurement on the strength of a countries military but without the index the United States would still be recognized for their military strength especially with their advanced Navy and Air Force. The United States is also forward planning consistently replacing equipment with new more effective and efficient machines. Examples of this are the development of the F-35 fighter and the Columbia-class submarines, which is planned to enter service in 2031. In the event of a war the United States Military puts the country in a good position to emerge on top.

Strategy

Components of Strategy:

  • Civil Relations with Military
  • Logistics
  • Engagement Abroad

Civil Relations

Civil Relations with Military

  • The Military is seen as respectable career choice and people generally view soldiers in a positive light
  • Becoming an officer carries prestige- especially if they attend a military academy
  • All voluntary force since end of Vietnam War, very important for relationship to public
  • Spends a lot of money to build brand, and keep positive public image, including basketball games on aircraft carriers

Example of US Air Force Advertisement

Logistics

Logistics

  • Capable of rapid deployment due to specialized units and range of bases
  • Rapid deployment forces include Marine Expeditionary Units, XVIII Airborne Corps, and US Army Rangers
  • Technologies do take time to implement such as the 14 years between beginning of F-35 program and it entering service in 2015

Deployment Abroad

Engagement Abroad

  • The US maintains over 800 military facilities abroad ranging from an almost city to small radar stations
  • Largest is Ramstein Air Base in Germany with over 8,000 active duty personal
  • Additionally, engages in joint training with militaries all over the world ranging from South Africa to South Korea

Industry

Relationship with Industry

  • Strong Relationships with the numerous US based defense firms
  • Leads to strong development
  • Close relationship between Military and Contractors is often criticized by public and some government members

Conclusion

Conclusion

For good reason, the United States is regarded as the strongest military in the world. Possessing the largest military budget has allowed the United States to develop the most cutting-edge technologies and implement a global strategy. While the budget of the military often faces political challenges in the US, most of the population is supportive of objectives and the troop.
