The Square Deals were progressive reforms that Theodore Roosevelt oversaw. These reforms were the beginning of America in the 20th century. As America was a rising power it also needed to fix itself

Something that caused the Square Deals was Roosevelt wanted this country to be successful and also to create a fair and just society in which everyone had an equal chance to succeed.

Using Federal Power

Federal Power

Teddy Roosevelt believed the a Modern America needed a strong federal government, so he used the power of the government to solve the nation's problems. Roosevelt wanted strong business in the competition but also wanted to give smaller business a chance to succeed.

Big Company Trust

Large Companies that had major control over there respected markets. These were called trust. The system however was messed up since these Trust can build a large company in a area with no competition and drive out the smaller business and when the small bushiness were out the Trust raised there prices and made everything more lucrative than it had to be.

Inerstate Commerece Commision

The Interstate Commerece Commission (ICC) was establishd in 1887 to regulate the railroad industry however it was not effictive. Roosevelt wanted to make the railroad inustry more important and more usefelt to the federal government. The Elkin Act and the Hepburn Act helped make this possible.

Health and Enviroment

Teddy Roosevelts after reading "The Jungle" he knew that the conditions of the meatpacking industry was in terrible condition so he wanted to change that. Since he was already making changes to the meat insutry he decided to also change up the Drug and Food market.

The Meat Inspection Act was an Act that Teddy Roosevelt approved in 1906. This law was made for strict cleanliness. It also made a program for federal meat inspection. This law was very important because it was a big change to American society. People would no longer get sick if the meat was bad since Roosevelt changed up the industry.

Pure Food and Drug Act

Food and Drug Act

The Pure Food and Frug Act was an act in which halted the sales of contamminated food and medicine. This law passed in 1906 and it also formed the Bureau of Chemistry as they were the ones enforcing the law. The Pure Food and Drug Act was very important because it helped imporve modern medicine.

Wildlife Perservation

With America going into a new era Roosevelt knew something had to be done to protect the nature of America. So Roosevelt created several national parks and monuments. These include the Grand Canyon, Muir Woods, Crater Lakes, and Mes Verde National Park.
