The Jekels settled in Santiago Chile, Elli graduated from high school and stayed in Chile. In 1950 she moved to New York and married Tom Carroll who worked for the us nations, a United States citizen. The couple lived in Rome, Italy, and Santiago, Chile. Elli’s she had 3 sons, she took care of them and was a hostess to the many visitors they received. The family returned to the US in 1961, settling in Bethesda, Maryland. Since then they lived mostly in the Washington area and volunteered at the Museum, translating documents from Italian, German, Spanish, and French into English.

  • on November 9 1938 officers came to the jekels's home looking for David but he wasnt home so they left. the Jekels planned to leave Vienna for Amsterdam in September 1939.. A few days before they were supposed to leave, they found out the British government had closed Trinidad to immigration due to overpopulation but decided to go anyways.. The family made it to Amsterdam, where they were aided by Jewish organizations like the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society and other organizations.

ellie attended a dutch school while her father david was not allowed to work. he was obligated to report to the dutch police every week and they contantly threated the family if they did not leave soon they would be returned to Austria.

They had barely reached the English Channel when the Germans invaded the Netherlands in May 1940. The Jekels disembarked in Panama and received help from Jewish organizations to continue their journey to Chile. They left again traveling in steerage. There were twenty men and twenty women divided into large rooms with bunks.
