Before he became famous,

Basquiat supported himself by making

and selling t-shirts & postcards (like this one).

Basquiat's artwork was

messy, but it was also very smart.

Critics, collectors, and historians loved the way that Basquiat studied science, history, literature, and art before interpreting it all in his

own unique way.

His paintings were

big and bold and a little messy.

He used the pseudonym, SAMO, to sign his artwork and graffiti.

You can see here how his paintings

played with other images

from history.

Neo-Expressionists

were also called "The New Wild Ones"

He included words and symbols to communicate his thoughts and feelings.

You can see a few of

his most famous paintings

because they communicated their ideas

and feelings by using colors and materials

in rough and "wild" new ways.

at The Broad Museum right

here in Los Angeles,

aaand...

He made this painting with his friend, Andy Warhol.
