Hudson River School

1825-1880

How it started

The school was fouded in 1825; it was founded by a very talented guy named, Thomas cole. It was the first native painting school in America. A group of artist that lived near the Hudson River, in New York started this school. It was a proud celebration to start this school, because it was the first art school out of Europe control.

The Founders

The founders of the Hudson River School were Thomas Cole, Thomas Doughty, and Asher Durand. They all worked extremly hard to paint the Hudson River and areas of New England. Although this was in America, all of the leaders had some sort of education and succesion in Europe.

Thomas Cole

Thomas Cole was the most romantic painter of the founders. He tried to focus on the stormy and monumental aspects of nature. Some of his more popular paintings are, 'The Oxbow" and "The Notch of the White Mountains."

Thomas Doughty

Thomas Doughty would paint a lot of pictures of the valley. He concentrated on the serene, lyrical, and companionships of nature. His more popular paintings were "On the Hudson" and "A River Glimpse"

Asher Durand

Asher Durand is a very talented artist, like Doughty he was very lyrical. He was very close and particulary made use of delicate lighting and woodland scenes. Some of his popular paintings were called "The Catskills" and "The Beeches"
