Document A is a short excerpt from a Portuguese textbook. This textbook gives a brief overview of the Middle Passage, and the experiences of the people who were involved with it, especially the crew and the slaves themselves.
This textbook was written in Portugal. Because the Portuguese were involved in the slave trade, this caused them to not be very critical of the slave trade.
The textbook authors chose to compare the struggles of the crew to the struggles of the slaves beacuse the authors want us to believe that they had equal experiences. However, we know that the experiences of the slaves were harsher than that of the crew.
The textbook used the word "migrations" to describe the experiences of Africans during the slave trade because they wanted to white wash it. The Africans were not "migrating" to the Americas, they were kidnapped and forced to go.
This textbook may not be a reliable source to help us understand the Middle Passage. It is written by the Portuguese, who were a major leader in the slave trade.
