Was there a mafia presence in Indiana?

Mafia Presence

The small town of Hobart, Indiana became home to an infamous tied to Al Capone, Michael Carrozzo. This small town, then only home to less than 6,000 Hoosiers, offered a safe haven for the mobster and his mafia allies, away from the action in Chicago. It was rumored to draw many of his friends, including Capone himself. The Carrozzo's kids went to the local school in this mostly rural community, so no one in the area suspected the man had any ties to the mob or Capone. He was thought to be a millionare from Chicago who wanted to settle down in a more pastoral setting.

How did the mafia make money in the 1920's?

Money Consumption

Some ways that the mafia made money was by providing illegal goods and services. They were most famously known for bootlegging but also did managed gambling, prostitution and abortion to make their money. They also extorted money from people and also laundered money.

Is there still a mafia today and if so what might be different from the 20's?

Mafia today and differences

The mafia does exist to this day but is not as prominent or as feared as they were in the prohibition era. By the start of the 21st century the mafia was not as it once was because of the breakdowns on the Mafia in the 80's and 90's and after the attacks of September 11th 2001, many agencies that were focused on organized crime faded away and focused more on Counterterrorism work. The five crime "families" of New York still exist but do not operate like they used to.
