Charles's

Law

History

Joseph Louis Gay-Lussac invented the Charles law when he discovered how gases tend to expand when heated. Although it was named after Jacques Charles to honor his works like in 1787 the experiments he did on how the volume of gases change or depended on Temperature. Jacques Charles determined this law when he would fill up his manned balloon flight, and an exothermic reaction would create hydrogen, he did not cool it down before charging it into the balloon. He found that after some time, the volume of the balloon went down or came down.

Formula

Formula

V1 / T1 = V2 / T2

Initial volume over initial temp. in kelvin equals final volume over final temp. in kelvin

Examples

Examples

Real-World

Examples (real-World)

Example 1 HOt-Air Balloons

Hot air Balloons are a good example since the air heated up inside the balloons expands and causes the balloon to inflate and rise.

EX 1

Example 2

Bread is another example because the hot air inside the oven causes the bread to expand and allows the bread to rise.

EX 2

Lungs

EX 3

As you inhale, air enters and increases in temperature inside the lungs. Because of this your lungs and body visibly expand as you inhale.

Examples (Worked)

Worked

Worked Example 1

Ex 1

A balloon full of air has a volume of 4.7 L at 23 C. What would the volume of the balloon be at 50 C in liters?

4.7L / 296k = V2 / 323 k

V2 = 5.1L (rounded to 2 sig figs)

Worked Example 2

Two hot air balloons are competing in a race Balloon 1 has a volume of 400 kelvin at 60.0 Liters. It is heated to 700 K. Balloon 2 has a Volume of 450 kelvin at 40.0 Liters. It is heated to 600 K. Which Balloon would be Larger?

Ex 2

Balloon 1 Balloon 2

60.0L/400k =V/700k 40.0L/450K=V/600k

V = 105 L V = 53.3 L

Balloon 1 would be Larger

Now You Try!

For You

A gas condenses from a initial volume of 8.7 Liters to a final volume of 6.3 Liters. The final temperature measured was at 45 degrees Celsius. What is the initial temperature of the gas in Kelvin?

ANSWER

Answer

440 Degrees kelvin, rounded to 2 sig. figs.
