The Reason Why the Coat of Arms can Communicate Without Words

Dylan Lim Jingyao 20/1/2023

The coat of arms is an incredibly versatile graphical representation of an identity. It masters non-verbal communication and manages to convey all the information needed in one insignia. The development of a coat of arms is essential to build identity.

An example of this is...

The United Kingdom

The United Kingdom's coat of arms is a perfect example of this. The lion symbolizes Britain, as does the three lions in the badge. The lion and unicorn of scotland respectfully both reside in the coat of arms, as does the harp of Ireland.

The Irish Coat of Arms

The Irish Coat of Arms is very similar to the UK's coat of arms, except the entire badge is now replaced with the harp of Ireland, and many embellishments that appear in the UK insignia are not present here.

The UK's coat of arms also has a blue belt-like symbol surrounding the badge, representing the Order of The Garter, which is the United Kingdom's most revered and senior order of knighthood acheviable.

Both the lion of England and the Unicorn of scotland are stood upon a grassy mound, of which has clovers representing Ireland, thistles representing Scotland, and Tudor roses representing England.

The Irish Coat of Arms

The Irish Coat of Arms is very simple. It features a large badge with a harp in the middle. It is not clear what the harp symbolises, but it has long been the symbol of Ireland for some time now. The Irish coat of arms can be seen on the United Kingdom coat of arms, as shown before.

Scotland's coat of arms contains a red lion with blue tongue and claws. It is the royal symbol of Scotland, although its origins are unknown.

From the examples shown, it is clear that the coat of arms has been used as a symbol for a long time.

The reason I think the United Kingdom's coat of arms was so good in question is because it symbolized that it was a combination of three countries; Ireland, Britain, and Scotland.

Not only that, it symbolized a lot more. It symbolized that it was a country based on a monarchial system, and it showcased many different aspects of the respectful countries. It did this by using so many different elements that ultimately results in a well-communicated symbol that deserves its title as the United Kingdom's Coat of Arms.

Coat of arms are convienient, timeless, and stylish, which is why a proper coat of arms needs to be developed, even as just a concept.

In conclusion, the reason why the coat of arms can be used to communicate an identity is because it takes the key factors of it's source material, and turns them into easily recognizable graphics that come together to form an identity.
