Meet your peers

  • You will each be given a card. You must find the classmate with the matching card.

  • Ask your classmate the following questions:

- What is your name?

- Where are you from and where did you attend high school?

- Why did you choose the Languages program?

- Which language are you the most eager to learn?

  • You will then be asked to introduce your partner to the entire group, so make sure to listen attentively.

Bingo

  • Your will each be given a bingo card with descriptions.
  • Walk around the classroom and write down the names of the students who match the descriptions.
  • You must have ten different names.

Course

604-3L2-RI "Communication en anglais - option Langues" aims to help students improve their English for their future studies and career.

This English course is only for students currently enrolled in the Languages program. It will help you better prepare for future English courses within the program.

Main Characteristics

  • Help students improve their mastery of the English language;
  • Help students develop vocabulary pertaining to their field of studies and future career;
  • Help students demonstrate autonomy and creativity in their thoughts and actions.

  • The second of two mandatory English courses;
  • Abilities vary from one student to another.

  • Develop a general competency in the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) to improve their ability to communicate in English in a meaningful way.

Reading Comprehension

Reading Comp.

  • Class 6 (September 26): Reading Comprehension Journal due (10 %)

- You must complete the document available on Léa.

- You must select three different reading assignments for this evaluation.

- The assignment is due on Léa at the beginning of class.

Midterm Presentation

  • Classes 7 and 8 (October 3 and 10): TED Talk Analysis (15 %)

- In a presentation of 6-8 minutes, you must describe and critique a TED Talk of your choice pertaining to your field of studies.

- A presentation outline is due on September 26.

- You must only be present on the day of your presentation.

Critical Analysis

Class 10 (October 31): Critical Analysis due (10 %)

- You must complete the document available on Léa.

- Unlike the "Reading Comprehension Portfolio", this assignment is based on pre-selected readings.

- You must select three different reading assignments for this evaluation.

- The assignment is due on Léa at the beginning of class.

Essay

Class 13 (November 21): Essay due (10 %)

- You must write a 450-word essay based on a topic pertaining to your field of studies.

- A formative version may be presented through Outlook by November 6 to receive comments.

- The assignment is due on Léa at the beginning of class.

Grammar, Vocab., Reading, and Writing Skills Test (15 %)

  • Class 13 (November 21):

- Summative evaluation;

- Time: Entire class*;

- Dictionary (English and/or French-English).

Classes 14 and 15 (Nov. 28 and Dec. 5): Final Oral Presentation (20 %)

Exam week (date TBA): Final Written Production (20 %)

Final Oral Presentation: 6-8 minutes, small groups, must demonstrate oral comprehension of an audio file, topics pertaining to field of studies or future career.

Final Written Production: 450-500 words, must demonstrate reading comprehension of a pre-selected text between 500 and 1000 words, topics pertaining to field of studies or future career.

Attendance

  • Class starts at 3:05 and ends at 5:45.
  • If you think you might be late, please send me a MIO.
  • If you come to class late, please enter the classroom discretely.
  • If you have a doctor's note, submit it before the next class and contact me for a retake.

  • Work on class activities and assignments only;
  • Come to class prepared (homework done, assignment given at the beginning of class, etc.);
  • Some of the activities must be done in teams.

Lab (HC-3160)

  • Make sure you have access to the Cégep Wi-Fi and can log onto the computers;
  • Work on the suggested activities only;
  • No food or drinks are allowed in the lab;
  • The break will be around 4:45.
