Reverse Manifest Destiny

Central & South America

How has the Global South been affected by the Global North specifically within the region of Central & South America?

Mexico

Influence of Coca-Cola with the indigenous communities in Mexico

Public

Health Concern

Public Health

  • In some parts of Mexico, it is cheaper and easier to find Coca-Cola than clean drinking water. Many malnourished communities needed the calories, so they began drinking more Coke.

  • According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Mexicans are the people who consume the most soft drinks —163 liters a year—and who die the most of diabetes in all of Latin America.

Economic Influence

Financial Influence

Coca-Cola, which has operated in Mexico for 88 years, is one of the country's largest employers, generating more than 90,000 direct jobs and 800,000 indirect jobs.

Climate Change and Migration:

People are migrating to city and urban areas. While these areas become more populated, environmental hazards and risk increase due to direct consequences of climate change. People of lower income, the elderly and disabled are more at risk, especially in poor neighborhoods and communities.

Africa

Africa is perceived to be a place full of war and famine, but in reality it is an extremely valuable continent for first world countries because of the significant amount of resources creating sustainability and stability for other countries.

Africa

First world countries and multinational corperations claim that Africa needs our help for development. Giving billions of dollars to Africa does sound bad but in reality, more is take out of Africa than is being invested in.

Exploitation

"While African countries receive around $19 billion (£14 billion) in aid in the form of grants, $68 billion (£53 billion) is taken out in capital flight." - Oscar Rickett

African governments are essentially controlled by multinational corporations that force them into confiscating their people's lands for crops, opening up mining facilities to extract resources, and using cheap labor to make the most profit. These companies claim to give jobs and opportunities for the people but it's government corruption by corporations and greed.

Corruption

This section ties back to colonialism in how powerful corporations and countries dominate and exploit less fortunate ones. The reverse manifest destiny is how the more fortunate come in and spread their ways to try to help, but isn't this way at all since it's coming in and stealing and ruining the livelihoods of them.
