Early
Life
- Real name was William Sydney Porter
- Born on September 11, 1862, in Greensboro, North Carolina.
- Enjoyed writing about the lives of the lower-class and middle-class New Yorkers.
- Attended school for a short time- then worked at his Uncles Drugstore.
- At the age of 20 he moved to Texas and worked on a Ranch and later as a bank teller.
- He married in 1887, and began freelancing sketches.
Embezzling
Imprisonment
- In 1896 Porter went to jail for embezzling bank funds.
- Actually a result of technical mismanagement
- He fled to avoid incarceration, but when he heard his wife was sick he rushed back to Texas.
- After the death of his wife Porter served for 3 years in a Ohio prison.
- Porter began writing his short stories while in prison and began to make a name for himself.
Writing
- Once released in 1902, Porter moved to NYC and began writing more
- While Porter never was able to complete a full length book, his true talent was at writing short stories.
- Porter's writing is described as dry and humorous.
- Porter passed away on June 5th 1910.
- Even after Porter's death his stories were collected and published.
