ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN - ART DECO

what is

ART DECO?

Art deco is an art movement that spanned from 1910-1939, ranging from large buildings and houses to interior design and small objects.

Combining quality craftsmanship and luxury with modern, contemporary styles, it represented glamour and riches.

The time period of Art Deco, encapsulated WW1 and the start of WW2, in the 1930s during the great depression, the art work became less bold and started a more

sleek look.

FRANK LLYOD WRIGHT

PAST DEISGNER

American Architect, 1867-1959

Designed more that 1 000 structures over 70 years

Wright used a range of influesnces ofr his work, a few of his major ones were:

  • Nature

influences

Wright was very passionate about Japanese culture, style, art, and architecture. He used it as a heavily influence in his works, showing great interest in ukiyo-e woodblock prints, he took great inspiration from Ernest Fenollosa, an American art historian of Japanese art, and went on to create a book that could be percieved as a direct expansion of Fenollosa's ideas.

The window designs shown from Robie House, exhibit strong geometric patterns, one of his favourite motifs.

SOCIAL & CULTURAL FACTORS

Social + cultural factors

  • His nursery also contained engravings of cathedrals, made by his mother to encourage his future
  • Growing up in an unstable household, Wright was trouble and struggled with high anxiety as a child
  • Playing with Froebel Gifts as a child, constantly playing with them led to a heavy influence in his work, he said their design and shape "[...] are in my fingers to this day"
  • As an adult, he endulged himself in expensive clothes, cars and other frivolous materials

Wright's period of his career

landed just before the age of comupters encorporation into desgining, so his work process didn't include much technology.

His career also fell before modern environmentalism, so not much of his work reflected the progressive views pertaining the environement. He did however have many of his works in architecture, was heavily surrounded by nature, so he obviously had a love for it.

tech + environment + econ

War was something that surrounded his life and career, both before and during. He seemed to design a lot of houses positioned in suburban areas, due to WWI and II the economic status of the United States would've dropped.

Environmental

factors

MAKE Architects is outwardly very involved in sustainable and economic environmental practices.

As they are a modern brand, they also face the pressure of making the correct actions, in terms of climate change and all concerns regarding the environment, as we currently live in a very political climate.

As shown on their own website, they have 'MAKE's 6 principles of susatinablity

  • Carbon
  • Environment
  • Community
  • Wellbeing
  • Connectivity
  • Green Economy

Social + Cultural Factors

Social + Cultural

Considering MAKE Architects is a modern design company there are a lot of social and cultural factors they have to take into account.

SOCIAL: There have been factors such as the pandemic, the rise of social media, and oversaturated media. In order to create a design that breaks through the noise of media nowadays, it has to be bold and take lots of ethics into consideration.

CULTURAL: As talked about prior, there are a lot of ethical concerns in modern day society, designs need to be aware of the impact on specific cultures, and the environment.

They state on their website to consider all these factors with deep deliberation.

environment + economic + political + tech

ENVIRONMENTAL:

Due to influx in concerns about global warming, deforestation, and sustainable practices, they way designers use and source their materials, takes large precedence.

ECONOMIC & POLITICAL:

Fortunately we do not have any current wars or periods of depression influencing our society. MAKE seemingly positions their designs and advertising towards audiences with higher socio-economic status. Using sleek, modern, and expensive materials, MAKE creates complex and sophisticated designs, for audiences with higher income.

ADVENT OF TECHNOLOGY:

In the past approx. 40 years, technology and design have joined hand in hand to help and aid eachother. There have been many differences between modern day design and past designs, many stemming from our access to tech and software that helps our way of designing. MAKE has a very stream lined and sleek design style, one heavily influeced by tech

CONNECTIONS

Frank Lloyd Wright and MAKE designs, both explore Art Deco deisgns, in interior and exterior decorating.

Both encorporate a great deal of nature and flora in their designs, whether its the setting of a forest or bringing the green onto the outside of the building. Both have extensive use of line and geometric shapes in their interior design, and utilise pattern and texture in their exterior design.
