BACKGROUND

  • Born 1947 in Johor, Fatimah Chik was trained as a textile designer in the MARA School of Art and Design.

  • In 1971, after graduating from the establishing batch of the textile and fashion department, Fatimah worked as a designer for MARA Handikraft.

  • Fatimah was working for Tengku Zubaidah as the first textile designer of KutangKraft at Sungai Penchala.

  • In 1974, Fatimah taught at the MARA Institute of Technology as a part-time lecturer.

  • She followed her late husband to Hawaii for 2 years. While she was there, she research about textile traditions and symbolic motifs from the cultures of Southeast Asia such as the Dayak, Batak, Sumbanese, Minangkabau, Toradja and Malay.

  • In 1977, Fatimah returned to Malaysia and was posted to Penang where she met a Kelantanese who suggested she transfer her designs to batik blocks. She learn anything about these technical aspects of batik, the chemicals and ingredients and such.

  • In 1984, Fatimah returned to Kuala Lumpur, already seriously delving into batik. In her experimentations, she intended to produce work for fashion but then considered creating for art.

  • A testament to Fatimah’s renown as a batik art authority is her role as permanent judge for all categories of the Piala Seri Endon and advisor of the Malaysia Batik Crafted for the World initiative, founded by the late Tun Endon Mahmood.

For KLFWKND 2015, this doyen of Batik introduces a collection of Batik apparels using a unique “Shiboritik” technique (Shiboritik = Shibori + Batik). Combined with the ability and talent of our local fashion designers, the end result of the partnership is a new and exclusive collection featuring exquisite and beautiful Batik patterns. The essence of the Batik is apparent in the effects of the colours of the tie-and-dye pattern achieved by Fatimah Chik through this technique. The Batik’s distinctive patterns and design ensure the wearer exclusivity and singularity in any setting and occasion.
