The Chihuahuan desert is the largest desert in North American covering over 500 thousand km. It covers parts of West Texas, New Mexico, Southeastern Arizona, and Parts of Northern Mexico. Its temperature varies from 13 to 40 degrees Celsius depending on the season.
The Chihuahuan desert is mostly a rain shadow desert and the reason for that is because of the main two mountain ranges covering it. Those two mountain ranges are the Sierra Madre Occidental which is towards to west and the Sierra Madre Orriental towards the East. These mountain ranges block most of the moisture from the gulf of Mexico and the Pacific ocean. Most of the time the desert has an arid, mesothermal climate. It has one rainy season that is mostly in the late summer, and in the winter there are some amounts of precipitation.
- Almost 80% of the Chihuahuan desert soil is from limestone beds
- It is only 8000 years old
- It has massive white dunes
- It is one of the most diverse arid regions
The Chihuahuan Desert has an elevation that varies from 480 to 1800m. This higher elevation means that the desert has a milder climate during the summer. However, because the desert is so massive it's elevation varies from high to low. This means that it's temperature and climate vary as well, since the lower the elevation the hotter the desert gets.
Arid- Arid means a region that gets no rain or very small amounts of rain. The Chihuahuan desert is known as one of the most diverse arid regions.
Dunes- Dunes are ridges or mounds of sand that are formed from the wind. They can also be made from other loose sediment. The Chihuahuan desert is home to massive white dunes.
Mesas- Mesas are flat top ridges, hills, and or mountains that are isolated. The Chihuahuan desert is bordered by Mesas.
Basins- Basins are low elevated lands that are surrounded by higher elevated lands that receive less than 25cm of rainfall yearly. The Chihuahuan desert has basins that are surrounded by mesas.
Bajadas- Bajadas are broad slops of material that is alluvial, that is at the foot of a mountain or an escarpment. Some land in the Chihuahuan desert slops upward to form Bajadas
