Reflection (Updated):

Reflection

of Music Education

After reflecting on the limited diversity in the composers and musical influencers in my k12 education, and then adding to this list who I would like included, I have realized a few things:

  • Not all the stories were told regarding these individuals. There are composers who I hadn't known much about, but the stories that are overlooked make them more human and more relatable.
  • The figures in history we teach our students about shouldn't be limited to composers and musicians. The teachers and philosophers in music are just as important. Without their work, I don't believe any of the music we have today would exist.
  • Looking for musicians from underrepresented groups, I've found music that is some times more accessible for my students, but the struggle is that often times there fewer recordings and resources. This work of filling in the gaps cannot be completed by music teachers alone. We need help.
