ORIGAMI

  • Origami is the art of folding paper into a sculpture, using no cuts or glue.
  • Origami was used in Japan for Shinto weddings (butterflies) and in gift-giving.
  • While origami's exact origins are unknown, it is speculated to have started in Japan, as it is first mentioned in writings dating back to the 1600s.

HISTORY

ORIGAMI IN EUROPE

  • Paper folding also has origins in Europe, first appearing in images from the 1400s.
  • Origami in Europe began as napkin folding as a table display for nobility, but was eventually replaced with pottery.
  • German educator Friedrich Froebel revived origami in Europe by implementing it into schools during a period of education reform.

ORIGAMI AND ENGINEERING

  • The folding techniques used in origami have helped engineers figure out how to make non-paper materials fit and fold-out from tight spaces
  • Origami techniques are used in airbags, stents, and satellite solar panels.
