Annotated Map

Portugal/Kongo

INTRODUCTION

In this annotated map I've chosen to focus on Portugal and Kongo, and how each of these countries have influenced each other. This will focus on the history of their trading relationship and how it esclated causing conflict between the two countries. They have influced each other through culture, economically, but also causing a rise in crisis. I chose to use the wooden cross as the primary source which is important as it repersents the era of when many Kongolese coverted to christianity.

Map

Portugal

PORTUGAL

They had an Island by the bay where Arabs and caravels (boats) frequently visited to trade goods such as corn, silver, cotton etc. Then in exchange, the Arabs would bring back slaves and gold tiber in return for the goods. This ongoing trade had the Lord of Portugal (Henry) have a castle built on the island to protect this trade forever. This trade would be continuous with caravels coming in and out this island all year around . Every year they carried away from the trades with approximently a thousand slaves.

Slavery

Some of the ways they obtained their slaves were through raids on villages. some slaves were forced on a ship to portugal or colonies in South America and the voyage across the sea would take up to several months. while these people suffered in the lower deck in horrifc conditions. 15% of the slaves would die before reaching the destination and would be tossed off the side of the boat.

Kongo

The Kongo had a trading relationship with Portugal, Kongo trading enslaved prisoners in return and got taken across to the Atlantic or back to europe. Portugal had a huge impact on many Kongolese people religiously, the king even converted to christianty and also decided to choose portuguese names. chrisianty spread all throughout Kongo.

Conflict

Kongo traded with Portugal, Kongo trading enslaved prisoners in return got taken across to the Atlantic or back to europe. However, the demand of slaves exceed the supply as of result the Portuguese resorted to enslaving the Konglese people themselves. The King Afoso begged them to stop but this continued long after his death. The relationship between these two countries began to sever. The Kongo began in an attempt to steer clear of Portugal and for this reason the Portugal king decided to kill their people as well as assassinate the king. This caused a massive riot.

The wooden cross was used as a metaphor and was an important symbolic piece for this era in the 15th century. This symbolized the time era of when Portugal had a huge influence over Kongo which made the king and people convert to chritianity.
