Antê-Lytomê: An Uncovered Civilization

Economics

Name of civilization

The name of our civilization is Antê-Lytomê. The word "ante" means "before" in both Latin and Spanish. We chose this word because our civilization was before many civilizations and discoveries. As a group we got the word "Lytomê" from a word generator.

Time Period

Our civilization started to form a city around 700 BCE. They became allies with Rome, but they were enemies with the Native Iberian Tribes. They had a few run ins with the Native Iberian Tribes, and even though it was a close call, they won. Just after they finished getting over a civil war and a famine, the Ottoman empire came in and took over the empire came in around 1457 (https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/21520841003689043?src=recsys&journalCode=ujme20).

Geography

Our civilization which is named after our capital, Antê-Lytomê, is located where modern day Murcia, Spain is. The weather in Murcia is calm, where the winters are not brutal and the summers are not either. The topography is mainly two things, plains and beaches. Due to the civilization being off the coastline it makes it easy for other civilizations to attack Antê-Lytomê. The defenses which are provided naturally are the Pyrenees mountains which make it harder for armies to come into the north of Spain.

Institutions

The Antê-Lytomê began lawless, raiders killing their brothers in cold blood. But as the first city rose from the blood and ashes, the king rose up with it. The first king, Alondite (a-'lawn-dite) the New Moon, coordinated the building of Antê-Lytomê in 700 BCE and established the codicem etígo, or the code of ethics. It said that the king's son or daughter would succeed the throne after his death, but if he had no children, then his brother or sister would take the throne. This was eventually changed in 450 BCE, after the rule of Brutus the Bloodthirsty, the worst king of his dynasty, to the election of the king by the diorum consilium (dee-'oar-uhm con-'sihl-ee-uhm) to better reflect the will of the gods. It also extended the law's power by establishing new crimes and punishments. The title of king hence became known as the Exsultemus (ex-suhlt-'teh-muhs), or the Exalt, as he had been exalted by the gods. The Exsultemus wielded Alondite, the blade of the first king, instead of a scepter and Tempest, the axe of Venotus, as his execution blade

Modern Day Artist Depiction of Alondite, as described by the historian Draconius in 500 BCE (Draconius is completely fictional.)

Laws of the Land circa 400 BCE

Laws

Some of the laws in the codicem etíco at this time are as follows:

  • Do not steal from the poor
  • Do not desecrate the temples
  • Do not attempt to assassinate the Exsultemus
  • Return what you borrow
  • Do not wield Tempest or Alondite unless you are the Exsultemus
  • Do not destroy any foe's crops unnecessarily
  • Do not miss your sacrifices

Some of the most important laws were:

  • Citizens should be ready to be called to fight at all times (Passed by Zelgius to ensure a standing army in 600 BCE) and;
  • You must reconcile with your enemy on the Harvest Festival (Passed by Karina the Blue to stop a civil war in 675 BCE)

Punishments

Punishments

There were many ways of punishing lawbreakers in the kingdom. The most common was the pillory, but they did invent keel hauling for the real offenses. They would tie the person to the bottom of a ship and let it sail, dragging the criminal under and tearing their back with barnacles. In due time, sharks would tear the person apart. Other punishments included stoning, burying a person from the waist down and surrounding them with raw meat to attract wolves, tying offenders to a wooden X and letting vultures eat away at them, and beheading by Tempest, the axe of Venotus.

Military

The military of Antê-Lytomê consisted of almost solely a powerful navy. In fact, the ship that the Romans found wrecked on their shores was not Carthaginian, but was Lytoman. The navy consisted of fast and small scout ships, ballistae-laden ravagers, bombers that launched Greek fire from long distances, and cargo vessels loaded with sailors ready to board other boats. They were inspired by the trireme's battering ram and used many on their boarding ships to safely let men across to the opponent's vessel. This ingenious navy allowed the Antê-Lytomê to survive for a millennium and more.

Responsibilities of the King

Responsibilities of the King

The Exsultemus had the whole kingdom in the palm of his hand, and so had many responsibilities. He made sure that all sacrifices were made at their proper times and all taxes were payed in full. He decided the fates of the people sentenced to death and planned raids and wars. Yet he was expected to dress like an artisan and not a god and act according to the farmers' opinion, not the aristocrats. Finally, the Exsultemus was to lead his troops aboard his special boarding ship and attack his foes first.

The Antê-Lytomê Pantheon

Religion

The Antê-Lytomê people had many gods, with Venotus, Lord of the Boundless Sky, and Maia Aquas, the Queen of the Azure Seas, being chief among them. They had many children, and their firstborn son was Lycan, Lord of the Pack and All who Walk upon the Earth. Their second son Montanum became lord of the Pyrenees, known then as montanum terra, or Montanum's land. Then came their twin daughters, Hordei Cebada, Goddess of the Barley Crop, and Tritica, Lady of the Wheat. Those were the most important gods, but there were several mortals that achieved their stature, such as Áquila, the fastest of mortals given the power of flight by Lycan to govern the birds of the sky, which is how the eagle got its name of aquila.

The Antê-Lytomê Pantheon as seen by the Romans

Diorum Consilium

Leaders

All decisions regarding the appeasement of the gods were discussed by the diorum consilium (dee-'oar-uhm cown-'sihl-ee-uhm), the council of the gods. Five oracles of the first pantheon congregated in Lycan's temple once a month to ensure good fortune in the coming days. Tirquinius (tihr-'kihn-ee-uhs), Venotus's seer, was said to have found eternal life, and indeed, many depictions of the council show Tirquinius present in the high seat, even though he should have died centuries before hand. They sacrificed tenths of all livestock and crops to the gods to ensure good harvests and strong military conquests.

The Harvest Festival

Harvest Festival

The Harvest Festival, held on October 31st, was the most important festival to the Antê-Lytomê. They celebrated all of the gods, as they all brought the harvest to fruition. Venotus had brought the clouds, and Maia Aquas plucked the water from them and sprinkled it on the dry earth. Montanum made the earth soft and Lycan commanded the oxen to furrow the dirt. Finally, the twin goddesses of barley and wheat grew with their crops, so that they would provide for their people. Men grabbed their scythes and reaped the fruit of the harvest. Women sacrificed to the gods and prepared the banquet tables at the temples, while their children dressed as animals and played with wooden boats and hid in the chaff of the threshing table. At the end of the day, all gathered at the temples to eat in honor of the gods who provided for them.

The Creation of the World

The following is a rough translation of the Antê-Lytomê creation story:

"In the beginning, the earth was dark and dry, and the lord of the sky, Venotus was troubled by the darkness. So he opened his golden right eye, and that was the first sunrise.

Now the earth was still dry, and no barley grew upon it, and no cows grazed. Venotus, in his wisdom, thought that life dwelled deep inside the dry earth. So he dug into the ground with arms like thunderclouds. A fortnight passed, the day lit up by the sky god's gold right eye and the night guarded by his silver left.

On that fourteenth day, he uncovered the most beautiful sight that his eyes had ever beheld. This was Maia Aquas, the goddess of streams and seas. She raised her arms and water flooded the hole Venotus had dug. It flooded the whole earth except the mound of earth that Venotus had created by his digging. And that is how Venotus found his wife and created the world with her."

Social Structure

In our civilization we have four parts, the monarch, the diniam, the centrums, and the nerico. The monarch is in the highest class and is above all others. They are in charge of the empire, but they do have advisers who help him out on big decisions. The more prestigious jobs are the advisers, scribes, aristocrats, and physicians. The more common jobs are the artisans, farmers, merchants, soldiers, and skilled laborers. The lowest class of people are the unemployed, the immigrants, and the people who do manual labor.

Class Structure

-higher class (diniam): advisers, scribes, aristocrats, and physicians

-middle class (centrums): artisans, skilled laborers, merchants, farmers,

- lower class (nerico): unemployed, immigrants, and people who do manual labor

- Over time as the soldiers became more important they became apart of the diniam. At the beginning the farmers were at the bottom but they became apart of the middle class as the society advanced.

Cities

The city of Anteˆ-Lytomeˆ was the beginning of the civilization of Anteˆ-Lytomeˆ. This city became the center of the Spaniards way of life. The location was on the Iberian Peninsula where modern day Mercia is. Though the nation eventually expanded and covered the coast of the peninsula, their center of trade and life remained in Anteˆ-Lytome. The civilization was mostly just composed of the main city, along with a few smaller cities as the territory expanded, so there wasn't really a suburban region of the nation. However, there were farms and rural areas on the outskirts of the city, mainly for agricultural purposes. The architecture of the culture is very unique to the religion. One of the most important gods in the civilization is Lycan, an Iberian wolf the god of all animals. Because of this, there were many sculptures and engraving of him on important buildings throughout the city.

Latomen

Language

The language of Antê-Lytomê is named Latomen. It is a blend between Latin and modern day spanish. There are small things which make this language stand out. There are three from the Spanish parts which stand out and two from the Latin language which stand out. There is also one thing added, any word which ends with a vowel has an accent over the letter.

Spanish:

1. There is a letter is like N, but sound like (nya) and has an accent over it.

2. If there are two Ls next to each other they sound like a y.

3. The Rs are rolled, and with two Rs next to each other it elongates the rolling R.

Latin:

1. There is not a capital U in Latomen.

2. There is not a lower case V in Latomen.

The Nokna, Kusmo, and Gaspra

The standardized currency of the Anteˆ-Lytomeˆ was not developed until 600 BC. The basic currency of the Anteˆ-Lytomeˆ was a tin-based coin known as a nokna, equivalent to about two cents. 108 noknas formed one silver kusmo, equal to 2 dollars in American money. And if you had sixteen kusmos, you had one gilded gaspra, worth 32 dollars.

Typical Wages of the People

Economic Crises That Had Affected the Kingdom

Economic Crises

Many crises struck Antê-Lytomê in its early days. In 550 BCE, Carthaginian pirates attacked and blockaded the city. Antê-Lytomê could not trade with its allies, leading to economic anarchy until the navy fought the pirates off.

Other raiders periodically attempted raids of the walled city on foot and took gold and silver, which disrupted the system. Even trade partners took advantage of them, usually with back-handed deals that led to inflation.

In the early 1st century CE, a severe famine struck the kingdom. No crops grew, so no trade was possible. Mints still made currency just the same, though, so inflation gave rise to panic.

Trading: Goods and Allies

Trade

The beginnings of trade for the Antê-Lytomê was in 650 BCE, as the port and marketplace had been fully established then. In the early days, they traded barley flour, wheat, olives, fish oil, and tin to island kingdoms such as Delos, Crete, and Sicily. In return, they got copper, bronze weapons, grapes, and wine. As time passed, they began exporting silver and gold for even rarer goods such as purple cloth from Arabia, red-figure pottery from Athens, iron weapons and armor from Rome, and even silk from China. But, they grew too prideful, and were eventually shunned by their partners because of their greed.

Agriculture Within the Kingdom

Agriculture

The Antê-Lytomê people were not a fully agricultural people, but did farm many plants. Common crops were barley, wheat, and olives that benefited from the hot, rocky coasts. Most barley was ground into harina, or flour, while the wheat was mainly grown for animal feed. Olives were either eaten straight or turned into oil to bake bread with.

Technology

Antê-Lytomê was a little more secluded around the beginning of the civilization, so they didn't find many things around them that would help them. As they traded though, they saw things other civilizations made and they copied them. For example, from Greece they heard about, and copied the water mill and some of their medicine practices (https://www.ancienthistorylists.com/greek-history/top-10-inventions-discoveries-ancient-greece-remarkably-used-today/). From Rome, they saw and copied their arches, and their idea of roads and highways (https://www.ancienthistorylists.com/rome-history/top-10-ancient-roman-inventions/). Through time though, they developed lifeboats and water maps which helped them become a better army and they were able to save some of their soldiers lives.

Technology

Their Progress

Their progress

Antê-Lytomê advanced by trying new things and experimenting, learning from other places like Rome, Greece, and the other Spanish civilizations around them. They saw other's failures and successes and learned from them, as well as learning from their own.

Arts, Literature, Customs, and Traditions

Arts, Literature, customs, and traditions

Arts: The arts of Antê-Lytomê mainly consisted of detailed drawings, which were incorporated in many storybooks. They were also very skilled in the art of carving and sculpting. Which they used to portray images of their gods, mainly the wolf god, Lycan.

Literature: One of the most common uses of Literature in this civilization is used in their invention of storybooks. And over time the Antê-Lytomêns began to use their literary knowledge to record historical events.

Customs and Traditions: A main tradition in this civilization is a coming of age custom for men at the age of twelve. They take the boys and leave them in the woods to grow as a pack following our wolf god Lycan. After a month they return to Antê-Lytomê.

Contributions

Because of the Anteˆ-Lytomens dedication and skills in boat building their work became important for nations to come, specifically in building the ships that sailed to the New World in 1492, the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria. These boats were inspired by those of the shipbuilders in Anteˆ-Lytome. The Spaniards that came after them, could see how successful their ancestors were, so they decided to model their ships after those before them in hopes of attaining the same successes. Their boats also saved the Romans from the Carthaginians. One day an unknown ship was found off the coast of Italy. The Romans copied this boat and through it, they were able to conqure Carthage. In addition, they also invented four items, which are still used today.

These included: lifeboats, first water maps of the Mediterranean Sea, fish oil, and storybooks.

Contributions

Though these boats weren't called "lifeboats" at the time, they had the same purpose. The Anteˆ-Lytomens had the idea to put one or two smaller baots inside of the larger vessels in case something went wrong, and they needed to be able to flee one of their ships in an emergancy. Below is an image of a lifeboat from today, originating from the idea of the ancient civilization.

First Water Maps

The country of Anteˆ-Lytome were the first of their time period to create cartography. Because the Mediterranean sea was a main part of their way of life, this was very benefficial to them. they could mark dangerous areas or areas wear enemies dwelled. They could also identify their trade routes and safe places in the body of water. This picture portrays a cartography map of the Sea today, which shows that the civilization's efforts are still being used today.

Because the Anteˆ-Lytomens were so involved in all aspects of the sea, they began to seek medical aid from their resource, specifically fish oil. They were the first to discover the benefficial attributes of this oil. However, because of their lack of scientific knowledge they believed it to be able to help with anything. So, whenever one was injured or sick, the people would rub the oil on the painful areas. We still use fish oil today to increase well being, but we are now more aware of its limits and most helpful usages
