Culturally Sensitive Care

In the LGBTQ Community

What I Learned Continued

  • 42% of people who are LGBTQ report living in an unwelcoming environment.
  • More than 50 percent of LGBTQ people experience some form of healthcare discrimination.
  • One in five trans people has been denied health coverage simply because of their trans status.

I believe that this article will help me efficiently provide culturally sensitive care when I get into the clinical setting because I know that each patient I encounter deserves to be treated with the best care I can give them.

The article explains the importance of teaching nursing students that it is essential to treat every patient with culturally sensitive care no more than what they identify as.

First I want to introduce myself...

I'm Samaya McQueen. I'm in Professor Scheves Introduction to Professional Nursing Class. The culture I chose for my paper was the LGBTQ community.

What I Learned

The article was fascinating to me as it introduced me to facts that I wasn't aware of regarding the health care of members of the community.

  • Most shockingly I learned that the LGBTQ community is vulnerable to social, psychological, and physical health disparities.

  • The article also shows a study that results in an improvement in the care of LGBTQ patients.

  • When the nursing students were provided culturally sensitive education their attitudes and knowledge about LGBTQ culture improved.
