The Wise

Old Woman

Summary

01

The Wise Old Woman, retold by Yoshiko Uchida, takes place in a small village in the hills of western Japan, and teaches the reader to respect the elderly. The story starts with the cruel young ruler of the village decreeing that old people are useless, and that all people 71 and older must be carried into the mountains to die. The story then focuses on a man and his mother, when the latter has just turned 71. The mother tells her son that her time has come to die in the mountains, and the son reluctantly takes her up the mountain. However, while he is climbing the mountains, he decides to take her back to the village and hide her, which he does successfully for two years. Then, Lord Higa, the leader of a neighboring village, threatens to conquer the village if the villagers do not complete 3 impossible tasks. The man's mother then solves all of the tasks, lord Higa leaves in peace, and the cruel young ruler realizes the importance of wisdom and repeals his decree.
