"Therapeutic Recreation [TR] is the purposeful use and ehancment of leisure as a way to maximize a person's overall health, well-being, or quality of life."

(pg.4)

Leisure and well-being model supported by The World Health Organization. They believe “all people, regardless of ability or disability deserve a life where they can experience pleasure, participate equally in relationships with others, and make a contribution to their community and world.” (Hood & Carruthers)

WHO

  • At first, the primary focus of health and human services was on deficit reduction or making problems better.

Main Points

Eventually, the focus changed to understanding and cultivating the strengths and capabilities of individuals and the institutions and societies that allow them to thrive.

Cont.

Meaning the positive aspects of people is the main focus. Specifically focusing on their happiness, strengths and capabilities. It leads to the realization of one's full physical, cognitive, and social-emotional potential.

  • Focuses on ability, rather than disability.
  • Develops strength & resources to build a life of meaning.
  • Develops the person as a whole
  • Based on positive psychology

Underlying Concepts

Positive Psychology

Which “is the scientific study of the strengths that enable individuals and communities to thrive. The field is founded on the belief that people want to lead meaningful and fulfilling lives, to cultivate what is best within themselves, and to enhance their experiences of love, work, and play.” (Penn Arts & Sciences)

For example someone who has a disability and participates in a leisure and well-being program will experience a higher self esteem, more likely to develop friendships, learn new skills and feel like a respected member of his or her community.

Example

Relationship with patients

  • Helps create a life with meaning despite challenges and limitations
  • Collaborative efforts between patients and TR’s (Independence)
  • Empowering patients
  • View potential in patients and then it’s the TR's duty to find that potential.

What Are The Benefits of Leisure?

Discussion

  • Lower stress levels
  • Lower likelihood to develop illnesses
  • Better moods
  • Less boredom which can help avoid unhealthy behaviors

Everyone needs a break when they’re feeling down, stressed from school, family or just life in general. Doing something you enjoy can almost instantly make you feel better, so I'd say leisure is very important for your well being

How important is leisure for your well being?

Strengths Limitation

Thoughts

  • It is versatile
  • Works for every population
  • Focus on positive aspects
  • Newer model/ focuses on current trends
  • Some policy makers and health care payers may not see leisure as concrete
  • Certain resources may not be as convenient in certain locations and economic situations.
