La Adelita, the machismos, and las soldaderas were all participants in the Mexican Revolution. Both parties, las soldaderas and the machismos, represented the gender roles within the culture and the "norms" of that time.
Las Soldaderas were women soldiers in the Mexican Revolution. Petra Herrera is one of the most prominent figures, she disquised her gender, commanded forces of both men and women and was a colonel at one point as well as a spy. Another figure was Angela "Angel" Jimenez whom used her gender to her advantage even escaping prison at one point. She also served as a spokesperson for the soldadearas.
Machismo is a form of masculinity which asserts the dominance of the male gender.
Las Soldaderas held low ranks in which they assisted men. These soldiers did not hold combative roles.
The machismo had very specific gender roles in which they had to be restrictive emotionally, homophobic, and exhibit social control or power.
Becuse of men's position as superior over a female partner, often the machismo gained control over aspects of her life such as work, study, social. "Machismo as a cultural factor is substantially associated with crime, violence, and lawlessness independently of the structural control variables"
Las soldaderas began in 1910 when the war started. With the opposing election forces Madero and Diaz needs for new armies started to form.
Although some believe machismo has ancient roots common in all "Latin" cultures since Roman times, others argue that it is an ideology that originated uniquely in Andalusia, Spain, and was carried over the Atlantic Ocean during the Spanish Conquest. There is even an opposite theory positing that machismo was indigenous to the pre-Columbian Western Hemisphere.
Las soldaderas took part all over the war.
The machismo took part all of Latin influenced countries as it was more a way of thinking than a group of men.
Las soldaderas took part in the war for a variety of reasons but the main attributing factors were; they were forced by their husband, they wanted to keep their family together, revenge for Victoriano Huerta's regime, or protection.
The mexican culture placed a high emphasis on the idea of manliness and the roles that men needed to
While the las soldaderas and machismos were fighting in the war, other events globally were taking place.
- Archduke Franz Ferdinand was shot in Bosnia
- Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia
- Russia gets involved
- Germany declares war on Russia
- Britain declares war on Germany
Although, many couldn’t fight in combat the soledera’s significance to the war effort was immense. They tended to the everyday needs of the soldiers. The significance is that the war may not have been won without these important women. The significance of machismo is that gender roles at the time became stricter. The women’s role was reduced down to servants for the men and men’s role became more dominant and superior. The Mexican revolution brought freedom to the middle class, but it also caused instability throughout the nation and a power struggle in their government. Due to the mass amount of lives lost and production of goods halted. Throughout the next three decades after the war, almost 50 different types of governments were attempted to make a government that everyone was happy with. This had disastrous effects on Mexico’s economy and intellectual standing. Eventually leading to the annexation of Texas and the Mexican American War.
