The Air Pollution Control Act

- First piece of legislation to address air pollution

- Declared that air pollution was a danger to public welfare and health

- The act left the states in charge of control and prevention and gave no means of enforcement to the federal government

- The first ever legislation passes regarding endangered species.

Love Canal

- Michael H. Brown leads to the discovery of long-term dioxin contamination at a neighborhood (Love Canal) in Niagara Falls, NY.

- 21,000 tons of toxic waste were dumped into the canal

- This lead to a significant number of birth defencts, abnormalities in children, and miscarriages.

Comprehensive Environmental Response Compensation and Liability Act

"Superfund"

- This act mandates the clean up of abandones hazardous waste sites by the parties responsible.

- The party that was responsible for the contamination at love Canal was the Hooker Chemical Company which lasted from 1942-1952.

March 28th, 1979

Middletown, PA

- The meltdown of the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant

- Causes 140,000 people to evacuate the area.

- Will take over 10 years to fully clean up.

- It will go down as the most significant accident in U.S commercial nuclear power plant history.

- Unofficial investigations nad lawsuits claimes there were above-average rates of cancer and birth defects in surrounding areas.

- Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change

- Established by the World Meteorological Organization and the United Nations Environmental Program

The panel

- Provides scientific information on climate change and will release Assessment Reports in: 1990, 1995, 2001, 2007.

- This panel was rewarded a Nobel peace prize its latest Assessment Report in 2007.
