Humans and Cats are very similar when it comes to our skeletal system. Both humans and cats skeletal systems have the same functions such as support and protection of organs and other body parts as well as storing minerals. Just like humans cats have long, short, flat and irregular bones. Their systems are both divided between Axial and Appendicular skeletons. While there are many similarities there are also many distinct differences. For example, while cats are much smaller than humans, cats actually have 230 bones while humans only have 206.
After finding out that cats have 230 bones while humans only have 206, you may be wondering where these extra bones come from. Many of the extra bones can be found in the tail of the cat. These are referred to as the cats caudal vertebrae (18-20). Humans don not have multiple caudal vertebrae like cats and other animals, they have a single bone known as the coccyx.
Human and cat skulls have very different shapes and sizes but they do include almost all of the same bones. The human skull is actually 20 times the size of a cats. Another difference between cats and humans is that cats facial shape sticks out like a muzzle while a human face is more flat. Also, Cats only have 30 teeth as an adult whereas humans have 32.
Unlike humans, cats do have a collarbone (clavicle) but it is not attached to any other bones (on a human it is attached between the shoulder blade and sternum). Their shoulder bones are freely floating. Cats were made like this to give them more flexibility and stealth to fit through small spaces that their head may be able to fit through.
Cats have 52-53 vertebrae whereas humans only have 32-34 vertebrae. cats have extra bones for flexibility and the ability to twist and jump high. Cats vertebrae are much more spaced out than those of a human. The human spine is much less flexible than those of a cat because it is used more for support.
