Snow White lives a simple life until the witch, who is addicted to drugs and jealous of Snow White, gives her a drug. After that, she goes through a series of hallucinations where dwarfs bring her more and different types of drugs. Eventually, she has too much and almost overdoses. However, Prince Charming comes along and saves her. He nurses her back to health and they get married. After that Snow White still smokes marijuana and makes it legal in her kingdom.

Set Design

Set Idea

For the set designs, I chose to focus them on five different categories. These categories included the main fairytale, the princess throne, hallucinations, the drug house and the hospital room. These sets also follow along with the plot of the play. Because of this, some of the sets are similar to one another with a few additional or changed items in order to represent Snow White's demise. My idea is that as the plot gets deeper into her drug addictions, the set gets darker and darker until it consists of only blacks and grays instead of being colorful. I thought that the best way to show the set designs was through renderings of the sets. I chose to draw the floor plan of what I imagine as the main set. I imagine that the main parts of the set will be the "curtain," which is a large piece of cardboard painted to look like a tree, as well as the backdrops, which would be a projection for each scene.

Scenes 1-6

Lighting

In scene 1 this is typical of day in life of Snow White. A wonderfully beautiful cottage and grounds in the woods. The sun is shining, the scene fully lit and with normal brightness and color differentiation. Scene 2 scene opens on the focus the well. Light shines down and highlights the well as the centralized meeting place for the Witch and Snow White where the Witch drugged the apple ad a gift to Snow White. Snow White returns to the cottage in scene 3, The 7 Dwarfs, varied in appearance, are all present in the same contextual light, however with different offerings and ultimate results. Choice is less defined by the fullness and the balance of the lighting. Opening in scene 4, Snow White is in bed, stricken by the drugs and deceit dealt her by the Witch and the Dwarfs. A low darken light, representing her life spirit shines onto the floorboard…. Weak, yet steady somehow. A small and hopeful light shines from the wall above, representing potential promise of a future. In scene 5, a miracle has dawned in the life of Snow White. The light from above, heavenly in a sense, shines down on her with the promise of life and future. We end up with all being rehabilitated in the world of Snow White for scene 6. Recreational Marijuana is still here, living alongside her future which in the scene which is brighter than ever, like a massive sun fully lighting the scene and her future.

Costumes

My overall concept for costumes was to make all the Characters, except for Snow White and prince charming who don’t originally do drugs, look like they have been on drugs for a while. For the witch, I made her look like she hasn’t had the nicest lifestyle and has probable been on drugs for a while or a drug dealer. I did this because the witch is the first person to bring her drugs because she is jealous. My inspiration for the witch came from a character on The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. For the dwarfs, I also made them look like they haven’t had the nicest life. When I was thinking of how to dress them, I thought of the people that wear white shirts and pajama pants to Walmart at midnight. For Snow White I still did nice but simple clothes. However, as the play continues and she takes more drugs, her clothes will gradually get dirtier and more ragged. Finally, I haven’t put it on here but for prince charming I was thinking of nice clothes like a suit because he is still the prince of the kingdom and saves her after she overdoses and nurses her back to health.

The concept for my props design was to be relatively dark due to the nature of the play. I decided that to highlight the main points and the darkness of the play there were only a few props needed. This is due to the concept we have for our remake of Snow White having a major change that included illegal substanes. Therefore, when choosing props for Snow White I decided that really only two props were extremely neccessary. The apple is the typical prop used to transfer a spell or poison in many plays and fairy tales therefore we decided to use it in ours as well. The microphone is for Snow White when she chooses to address her people, a microphone was chosen due to the time period that the story is now set in. Following Snow White's props there came the seven Dwarf's props that were simply the drug paraphernalia associated with each one of the Dwarves that were named after their specific drug. The dwarf associated with marijuana would need a rolled up piece of paper with green filling representing a blunt, the dwarf associated with cocaine would need white powder, the dwarf associated with meth would need a syringe and fake crystals, the dwarf associated with heroin would need a spoon with a white powder on it and a syringe with a dark liquid inside of it, the dwarf associated with molly would need circular colorful pills, the dwarf associated with LSD would need white circular pills, and the dwarf associated with xanax would need white rectangular piils. All in all the props for this play are fairly basic due to all their connections but this gives the play it's true dark appearance and makes the story change of drug use stand out more than it already does
