CAUSATIVE VERBS ACTIVE AND PASSIVE STRUCTURE

CAUSATIVE VERBS

WE USE THEM WHEN WE WANT THAT SOMEBODY ELSE DOES SOMETHING FOR US

Let’s begin with the verb HAVE. Although we know that the meaning of have is TENER, in this case its meaning will change completely, in this case it can mean PEDIR, MANDAR, SOLICITAR, ENCARGAR… HACER QUE ALGUIEN HAGA ALGO.

Active structure: Subject + have (TENSE) + indirect object + verb simple form + direct object

Ex: She has the plumber fix her sink = Ella le pide al plomero que arregle su lavabo

She had the plumber fix her sink

She didn’t have …..

Did she have ….. ?

In this case we can also use the verb ASK that means PEDIR but the structure is different:

Ex: She asks the plumber TO fix her sink. The difference in this case is that we have to add the infinitive TO.

Passive structure: Subject + have (TENSE) + direct object + verb past part + indirect object (optional)

Ex: She has her sink fixed BY THE PLUMBER (OPTIONAL) = Ella manda a que su lavabo sea arreglado

She had her sink fixed…

Did she have ….. ?
