Windward Island Volcanoes

By: Israr, Arianna, Reece

Soufriere Volcano

La Soufrière is the

youngest volcano on the island. it stands at 4,049 ft. It is a composite volcano partly made of tephra partly made of lava. The danger would be high if it comes to erupt.

Soufriere Volcano

Shield Volcanos

sheild volcanos are formed by slow moving lava rising from the neck and the vents it is the least steep and least dangerous.

It can be up to 100 miles long and 6000 feet tall

Cinder Volcanos

is made from only tephra and shoots out cinder particles and bombs. it is 3,000 feet tall and 2nd most dangerous.

Composite Volcanos

They are layerd with lava and tephra. they are the most dangerous and steep. They are 14-15,000 feet tall.

Island History

The winward islands are a chain of volcanic islands with lots of previous eruptions recorded. mt pelee was active in 1790, then again in 1851, then from 1902 till 1927

Island History

Volcano in 1843

Volcano La Grande Sovufriere erupted due to a earthquake, killing over 5000 people

Volcano in 1843

Mt. Pelee eruption 1902

Mt. Pelee eruption 1902

May 8th a few hours after the eruption of St.Vincent, Mt. Pelee erupted on Martinique Island killing about 30,000 people. It was one of the most destuctive volcanic eruptions in history

1718 St. Vincent

This was the first ever recorded eruption on the islands. It was caused by recent earthquakes. It was very destuctive.

la soufriere 1979

in a 1971 eruption, an island formed in the middle of a lake which filled a crater, causing la soufriere to erupt. thankfully, due to to advance warning there were no casualties and no fatilities

Why do volcanos erupt?

Convection currents are formed while magma gets pushed up through a weakness in the earths surface and becomes lava. it cools and over time gets pushed down into the mantel to restart the prosess.

The Dangers

La Soufrière is the youngest volcano on the island. it stands at 4,049 ft. The death zone, where almost all persons were killed in the last eruption, was close to entirely Carib. If it were to erupt it would be dangerous and cause masive destruction.

How do we know if it's going to erupt?

Soufriere is actually situated in the caldera of the dormant Qualibou volcano, also known as La Soufriere Volcano. It shows no signs of erupting but might erupt in the future. The signs it would show if it were to erupt would include small earthquakes beneath the volcano increased emission of heat and gas

How can we stay safe?

La Soufiere is a dormant volcano inside of a caldara. Mt.Pelee is an active volcano. Wear a emergancy mask over your face or a damp cloth and long pants and sleeves.
