The Battle of Dieppe

August 19, 1942

Topic

Why?

The Battle of Dieppe happened because Hitler wanted to control the world.

When and Where

It happened August 19th 1942. This battle happened on the coast of northern France. Hitler concentrated all his forces there.

Who was involved?

Russia begged the US and Britain to join and France, they wanted Germany's army divided. There were 5000 Canadians in the fight.

What happened?

It was supposed to be a quick raid but it turned into a battle and many people died, mostly Canadians. This went very bad approx 900 Canadians killed, 2000 were taken as prisoners of war, Canadian and British troops were humiliated.

Mistakes made by allies

Allies did little to no bombing. The attack was supposed to be a surprise, it was not. The Germans saw the ships coming and warned Dieppe.

Mistakes continued......

The attack was supposed to happen at daybreak but happened during the day because the ships were late. Canadian troops had to climb sleep cliffs, climb over barbed wire and bombs while being shot at from above by the Germans. Tanks were late, only a little artillery support from battleships, Some ships were destroyed which made Canadians retreat hard.

Lessons learned from mistakes

During the next attack, they knew to make sure they pre-bomb. Improve communications so everyone is on the same page.

Lessons learned from mistakes continued....

We need to clear out obstacles with bombing so the men and tanks can get in. No more attacks on areas with bad access. No port cities. We need more tanks, more guns, and to locate the enemy before fighting. Need planes. Need to make sure they do not know we are coming.

Conclusion

Even though many lives were lost mostly Canadians the lessons learned from this battle gave us the knowledge to be successful at Vimy ridge
