I recommend this book to anyone who believes in equality and justice. I would advice that this is a book for teens and up due to the language and the matters of the book. This book talks about some real things going on in our world and it is empowering and inspiring. All in all I think that the book is amazing and deserves to be given 10 out of 5 stars.
"Once Upon a time there was a Hazel-eyed boy with dimples.I called him Khalil. The world called him a thug.He lived, but not nearly long enough, and for the rest of my life I'll remember how he died." (pg 443 )

The book starts out talking about Starr the main character. She lives in Garden Heights which is considered the "hood". Her parents are firm believers in education so they don't send her to schools that are in their neighborhood.Instead they send her to a private school in the rich side of town. Starr's parents are very over protective and never let her go to parties. On a Friday night at the start of spring break she goes to a party with her step sister Kenya. At the party they hear gun shots go off. She and her buddy Kahlil get out of there and into his car. On there way back to Starr's house they get pulled over by the police.
When they get pulled over by the police Starr thinks of all the things she is supposed to when a police comes. "Keep your hands visible. Don't make any sudden movements. Only speak when you are spoken to." (pg 20)Kahlil must not know this because he does the exact opposite. When the officer is done asking questions Khaili grabs his hairbrush and asks if Starr is okay. The next thing you know is he is shot dead on the ground. Starr's parents are notified and they find her. She is scared for life. Luckily, it is spring break so she has time to recover. She is kind of hiding and not speaking up for Kahlil. This happens for a while. The only problem is spring break is over now.
After, being in hiding for so long Starr decides to speak up. Her friends from Her school realizes it's her and that's why she has been acting weird. She has been having a hard time at school with her friends and boy friend. She speaks out and she wants to fight for Khalil because the police officer shouldn't have killed him. Not to mention that the police officer and Khalil are different races. So Starr decides that she is going to take it to court. They wait for five days with no word. Until finally they let the news out. The police officer is not going to be responsible for his death. Because Kahlil didn't get justice there is riots that break out. So Starr, her boyfriend, and her brother Seven head to their dads store. When they are in there some one throws a piece of wood that is burning.
They have to escape before they burn to death. Thankfully the neighbor is there to get his son to bust open the door. It doesn't work so there dad comes and unlocks the door. The kids go to the hospital. After, this Starr's parents make the decision that they should move to a different neighborhood that is safer. Where they can go outside a ride there bikes without worrying about getting shot.
Most of the news about Khaili had died down now, but to Starr she was still fighting for him. She was going to use her voice and stand up for what she believes in. Her dad gave her the push she needs to use her voice by telling her that he named her Starr for a reason. Starr would never stop remembering Kahili and now her life would never be the same. It changed for the better and for the worst.
The internal conflict in the story is with Starr. She is battling with her two personality's.The Williamson Starr and the Garden Starr. She has to be two different people and now her worlds are colliding. She has to find the happy balance of both and has to keep most of her friends. She also, keeps remembering the night that Khalid died and all the blood. She wants to speak up for him, but she doesn't want to in danger her family.
The theme of the book is equality. This is the theme because Through out the book Characters are discriminated against. They are fighting for equality and to make a change in the world they live in. They just want people to be equal no one better than the rest.
