Roman Economy

Intro

One of the primary reasons that the Roman civilization survived for so long (1000 years) is because of their Economy and the way it functioned as a primary asset to the government.

Slavery

Ancient Romans relied on slavery for just about everything.

They used Slavery for farming and household chores.

Slavery

Farming

  • Slaves in Ancient Rome farmed all the major crops for trade usage
  • Slaves also farmed the feeding crops for the massive population of Ancient Rome
  • They used a type of farming called two tier crop farming.
  • Two tier crop farming is a very ancient method of farming that isn't in use in modern society

Household Chores

Chores

As far as household chores go for the Ancient Roman slaves, it was very similar to the American Slave generation

  • The rich had a slave or multiple
  • The slaves cleaned and served and did what they were asked without pay
  • There were no laws against slave abuse in Ancient Rome

Mining and Minting

Metal

The Ancient Romans largest source of wealth was from the selling of their rock and minerals.

They used this wealth and metals to develop one of the most advance ancient currency's of all time.

Mining

  • Metals and mining were the largest source of wealth and trade for Rome
  • The metals they collected were used for their constant need of new art and statues
  • The metals were also used for their weopons of war, and the instuments for music

Minting

  • Ancient Romes currency was made of brass, copper, bronze, silver and gold.
  • The Roman Government used coins to mint propaganda onto coins during times of war
  • Every coin was a piece of art, coins were sometimes not even used because of the artistic beauty

Trade

Trade was one of the most essential reasons why the Roman Civilazation lasted as long as it did

Money and resources were gathered from the trade to other countries

Countries

  • Rome would trade with Spain, France, small countries in the middle east, northern Africa and their largest partner was Britain.
  • Through these trade they would recieve things like food, resources, and building supplies

Trade Items

Items

  • Besides metals, Rome sold grapes and olives as their number one product
  • They also used these products to make mine and olive oil which was needed most in the bordering countries.
