Jazz development began in New Orleans. Once New Orleans established set places on where slaves were allowed to play music or dance the growth of jazz began. African-American music styles were mixed with popular styles of the 1800's and jazz was created. Jazz was created as dance music and evolved into separate styles and purposes of the music.
Originating from New Orleans, Jazz began with the Ragtime style. Musical aspects coming from African music were introduced to American music, formulating the first jazz music documented. Syncopation is what made this style of jazz so distinct. To syncopate in a song is to make the rhythm have displaced beats. Due to this, the ragtime style was easier to distinguish. Ragtime was also different as this style of jazz wasn't created to dance to, and was more so for an audience to enjoy.
As Jazz spiked in popularity and the music style progressed, the "Classic Jazz", or New Orleans style jazz arose. The introduction of jazz music being played with bands began. As opposed to Ragtime, this style of Jazz was mainly for parties and dancing. This style mixed ragtime syncopation along with the popular music styles at the time. The dynamic of improvisation in jazz started.
Hot Jazz was the introduction of more solo jazz performances. Receiving the name "Hot Jazz" from its tendency to build up to a "hot" climax.
Chicago Style was more popular among upcoming younger jazz artists. The purpose of this style was to enhance improvisation. This improvisation helped improve jazz music at the time.
Swing music was dance music and is one of the more popular styles of jazz listened to. The style was performed by large groups, like big bands, something similar to an orchestra. This style of jazz was popular and played throughout the great depression and near the second world war. Because its popularity strived through such events, the music served as a way to raise morale.
The Bepop era, also just known as "bop", was the first modernized jazz style. Bepop was not classified as dance music and was more so seen as an art. This style of jazz was also not accepted by the public or musicians themselves at first. Bepop helped shape many more styles of jazz.
Mainstream jazz is generally referred to as music that had its own style. The other three styles all originated from Bepop. Each having a different sound, and adding different factors to make it its own style. For example, Bossa Nova takes Brazilian music styles and integrates them. The jazz industry also suffered during this time as other forms of entertainments bloomed.
Free Jazz was its own new creation. The new style was almost not considered jazz considering how “free” it was, hence where it gets its name. Soul jazz, a word we often hear today, originates from bop as well. Jazz suffered during the 1960’s, and was almost forgotten as rock 'n roll thrived.
Groove
Groove originated from soul jazz . This style of jazz is meant for dancing and is sometimes referred to as "funk".
Fusion style jazz mixed the improvisation of already existing jazz, as well as integrating new rock music tendencies. In the 1970's most jazz players all moved into this style of jazz leaving others in the past. This style of jazz helped shaped other music like the evolution of rock, but is less present in modern day jazz.
Afro-Cuban Jazz combined music with North, South and Central America music styles. Post bop was a newer style of jazz as it could not connect to any already existing styles. 1980’s jazz had many influences pushing jazz to continue to grow. A large influence was retro as more musicians used its style.
The revival of Swing was a completely unexpected event of the 1990's. This revival was caused by the retro trends occuring, granting swing a new name of "Retro Swing". Classicism was the start of small bands again. Classicism, or "Classic Jazz", was original jazz styles reviving, including styles popular post second world war. Both these styles brought a newer and younger audience into the jazz industry.
Jazz rap revolved around combining African-American music from the past with jazz. European jazz was created once those outside the jazz industry began to create music in attempt to bring back past jazz dance styled music. New jazz styles began to decline at this point.
Jazz style creation has slowed and old styles still thrive in modern day music. Jazz has influenced fashion, music, and even literature. This style of music is so significant to African-American history and played a huge role in the Civil Rights Movement. Jazz continues to appear in our lives today and is one of the most popular and influential styles of music.
