Strategies for Learning ASL

Strategies

  • Build a language community
  • Minimize reliance on English as you listen or converse in ASL
  • Focus on meaning not individual signs
  • Focus on the signer's face, not on the hands for two very important reasons
  • Show you understand the signer

this class can be much much more enjoyable when we are able to be interactive

if you miss class someone may have to partner up with me, we're better Together!

Language Community

you benefit from Being Interactive learning as much as you will from my teaching

This room may be used for English most hours but this is not one of them

immersion is key! take advantage of the environment the entire time you are here

Less English

Side note: when doing your ASL homework put in your earplugs or go to a quiet setting. This will help you focus and learn to rely more on what is going on visually

bring your English back for a moment. What are Homographs?

We have the same thing in a little different way in ASL.

Meaning > sign

Think about the meaning of what you are trying to say or what is being said rather than the signs

HOMOGRAPHS are words that are spelled the same but have different meanings.

Homographs

Ex: Bass, Fine, Lead

ASL Examples

Run

Many things run but do they all grow legs to do so?

Example

Fear

Do we fear God in the same way we do bringing home bad grades?

This is a Big one!

Not just for this class but for respect of Deaf culture

Look at me

This is still happening so I feel the need to emphasize this even more

It is considered inappropriate to look away, it gives the impression you do not care

It also causes you to miss important information

Important to understand: if you have a blank stare on your face I am going to think you do not understand me

Understand

This will cause me to repeat until I get affirmation we are all on the same page

Understand

Sign?

Don't Understand

Let's Dialogue
