Education and the Workforce Committee

The House Education and the Workforce Committee currently has 45 members. 25 of which are Republican and 20 that are Democrat. It oversees education and workforce programs that affect Americans from secondary education to retirement.

The U.S. Department of Education establishes, administers, and coordinates federal assistance to education. It assist the president in executing education policies and implementing laws created by Congress. Created in 1980, the Department of Education has 4,400 employees and a $68 billion dollar budget.

  • Establishing policies on federal financial aid for education, and distributing as well as monitoring those funds.
  • Collecting data on America's schools and disseminating research.
  • Focusing national attention on key educational issues.

The National Education Association has 3 million members across every state that work to advance justice and excellence in public education. Their mission is for public education to prepare students for success in the world.

Public Policy

The IDEA makes free public education available to children with disabilities and ensures special education and services to those children. It authorizes formula grants and discretionary grants to support special education.
