The Roles of Women

During World War II

"But because of their perseverance and dedication to service throughout the war, they helped pave the way for women in the military who would come after them."

(Over 200 Years of Service: The History of Women in the U.S. Military)

INTO THE LIVES OF THE WOMEN

THE VARIOUS ROLES

World War II was the turning point for women and their roles in society. As many women continued their roles at home others also began working in industries and in the military.

"Women raised their hands to support the country" (Women of World War II).

WOMEN AT HOME

"For the many women who stayed on the home front, volunteering through such organizations as the Red Cross, the USO, and the Office of Civilian Defense was their avenue to war involvement" (Our Mother's War).

WOMEN AT HOME

Women not only volunteered in Military affiliated organizations to support those away from home, but they also stayed home to raise their children. Fulfilling at the time the common and stereotypical role of women. Many served as beacons of hope for the men on the front lines.

WOMEN IN THE WORK FORCE

WOMEN IN THE WORK FORCE

"Women were critical to the war effort: Between 1940 and 1945, the age of “Rosie the Riveter,” the female percentage of the U.S. workforce increased from 27 percent to nearly 37 percent, and by 1945, nearly one out of every four married women worked outside the home" (American Women in World War II).

Women joined the military, worked in defense plants, drove streetcars, worked on farms, and performed other roles on the home front. All to ensure the country continued to succeed and move forward during war time.

WOMEN IN UNIFORM

"Nearly 350,000 American women served in uniform, both at home and abroad, volunteering for the newly formed Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps (WAACs, later renamed the Women’s Army Corps), the Navy Women’s Reserve (WAVES), the Marine Corps Women’s Reserve, the Coast Guard Women’s Reserve (SPARS), the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASPS), the Army Nurses Corps, and the Navy Nurse Corps. General Eisenhower felt that he could not win the war without the aid of the women in uniform" (History At a Glance: Women in World War II).

WOMEN IN UNIFORM

Women served in the military as nurses, secretaries, mechanics, pilots, cooks, and many more non-combat roles in order to free men to fight.
