My Timeline

Hi my name is Jizell Bosques and I will be talking about my personal timeline. I will be covering my life story, also major events that have occurred in my life. As well as mentioning important dates in Ethnic Studies history.

Introduction

By: Jizell Bosques

First Major Event: The day I was born

The first major events in my life was the day I was born. But lets start from the beginning, my grandparents in the year 1982 decided to cross la frontera to give their kids a better life. Their kids are my uncles and the only daughter is my mother Cindy Ceballos. My uncles names are Bryant Ceballos, Joaquin jr Ceballos and Lalox Sanchez. After leaving Mexico they decided to settle in San Jose California and this is where I was born years later. On November 15, 2004 at 4:16pm Cindy Ceballos's second daughter was born (THAT'S ME). I am currently 15 years old.

First Major Event

Second Major Event:

My parents separation

This is my second major event and probably the one that impacted me the most. I was 1 years old and my older sister was 2 years old when my dad left. I but I don’t remember this event. But my mom remembered everything that happened. My mom would tell me and my sister stories and stories about my dad, but they weren’t positive stories. I interviewed my mom about her experience, I asked her, “How did this experience make you feel?” her response was, “This experience made me feel lots of emotions, it made me feel sad, happy, angry, and most of all frustrated. I did what I did to give you girls a better life and look at you girls now, doing amazing.”. She was completely right about this, after years of struggling and not having him in our lives we are doing amazing now

Second Major Event

Third Major Event:

Step-dad

My third Major event would be meeting my step-dad Carlos. When we all first met Carlos we were so happy he brought a side out of us that we didn’t even realize we had. My little family went through this experience of meeting Carlos, so I interviewed all of them to get their point of view. I asked them a few questions, one of them was, “How would you describe your relationship with him?” Nicci’s response was, “He knows me well, for example, he knows that I love takis so every time he goes to the store he remembers to get me some. I’d say our bond is strong and happy.”. Vianey’s repose was, “ I would say that we have our humor, lots of sarcasm which I love. He has been there for me on my hard days and he has always made me feel better.”. Another question I asked them was, “The day you met him what were your thoughts about him?” and both their responses were, “My first thought was that I was going to love him and were going to make amazing memories”. We all have a very close relationship with our step-dad, we admire him so much for everything he has done for me, my mom, and sisters.

Third Major Event

Fourth Major Event: Passing of my great grandma

I’ve had many good experiences in my life but the fourth major event in my life was the one that hurt me and my family the most, which was the passing of my great-grandma. This experience changed our lives but it damaged my grandma the most because that was her Mother. To get her point of view I interviewed her I asked her a couple of questions. One of the questions I asked her was, “How did you feel?” her response was, “I felt really sad and empty because the women who brought me to this world passed away and it was so unexpected. When I woke up in the morning I just remembered your tio tito telling me she passed away.”. Another question I asked her was, “What do you remember from this event so when your mom passed away?” her response was, “I remember seeing her in that casket from the last time, I remember feeling her cold skin and her beautiful face. Seeing the entire family together again brought me joy but then the passing of my mom brought me sadness the majority of the time. I still think about her, every single day.”. While interviewing my grandma I got very emotional because hearing all these stories of her made me sad because I never got to meet her.

Fourth Major Event

Where My Family Is From

My family originated from Colima Mexico. My dad is from San Jose California and my mom is from Tecoman. I know that Tecoman is a city that is in the state of Colima, located in central−western Mexico. Tecoman, a city near the Pacific coast, is known as the World's Lemon Capital. Colima has been exporting lemons to California and Florida since the 19th century. It is such a beautiful place. It's a warming environment. My family has told me wonderful stories about Tecoman, especially about the warm beautiful beaches.

Traditional Foods

One traditional food my family eats is pozole. This food isn’t from where they’re from but it’s a tradition, we do to this day. Pozole is a traditional soup invented by the indigenous peoples of Jalisco which is where my biological father is from. It is made from hominy with meat and can be seasoned and garnished with shredded lettuce or cabbage, chile peppers, onion, garlic, radishes, avocado, salsa, or limes. This food can be also paired with tortilla chips and as for a drink horchata or a jarrito. Pozole is one of my favorite foods next to tamales and tacos. Apart from teaching me about our foods, my family also showed me about different customs.

Traditional Foods

Family Customs

There are a couple of customs that my family practices, two of my favorites are día de Los Muertos y dia de Los tres Reyes Magos. For Dia de Los Muertos you celebrate your loved ones’ past life, you dance, sing, and make traditional foods for them. That is exactly what my family does, we all get together to make food, dance, and party. Every year we go to big events on the week dia de Los Muertos is being celebrated which is October 31st- November 2nd, and usually, it's located downtown San Jose. I get to see everyone dress up in beautiful dresses with face paint, and see the traditional dances. It’s such an amazing experience and it’s all dedicated to our loved ones who have passed away. As for the custom Los tres Reyes Magos it is celebrated on Jan. 6 of every year. The day marks the end of the 12 days of Christmas and celebrates the three wise men, Melchor, Gaspar, and Baltasar, who traveled from distant places bringing gifts to baby Jesus. Where families usually Hispanic buy this big round bread and hide a tiny doll inside of it and whoever finds it has to throw a party or make food. The best part is eating the bread with warm hot chocolate on a nice cold night.

Customs

Passed down Traditions

One tradition that my family passed down to us is staying up on Christmas eve to open the presents up, right when the clock hits midnight. This tradition consists of traditional foods such as tamales, pozole, tacos, and traditional music in our family such as house music, throwback music, and banda. Also, consists of dressing up and family coming over. My family practices this tradition because it's a must in our family. We have been doing this for years. This tradition is important to my family because it's a time where we get together and spend some time. I do enjoy this tradition because we get to stay up and party, have some fun with our entire family. The best part is seeing all the smiles on people’s faces when they open Christmas gifts.

Passed down Traditions
