1800's

John Dewy was a well known philosopher who believed that learning should be based on what the children are interested in. So he wanted teachers to observe the children in the classroom and make a curriculum that was based on what the children were interested in. To extend the child's interests, the teacher would be teaching educational experiences that were based on what the children were interested in.

In Education:

John Amos Comenius supported that all people should have the equal right to education. He thought that mothers would be the best educators and not schools. He believed that children learned best through sensory. He also believed that children would learn the names of objects best if they were together and not apart.

Contributers: John Amos Comenius (1592-1670

Frobel was the father of Kindergarten Germany in 1837. His theory was that play is what was needed in a learning environment. During this century, the Industrial Revolution occured and women were needed in the work force, so children were to be protected in gardens "Childcare Centers or daycares". Another word for a childcare center or a Kindergarten. The first US Kindergarten started in Wisconsin in 1856 by one of Froebel's students. It was a German speaking Kindergarten. During this time, teachers didn't really "teach", because they were to observe and guide children through their experiences and not to interfere.
