Van Gogh

Master of Post-Impressionist Painting

1853

Vincent Willem van Gogh was Dutch.

  • Born on March 30, 1853, in Groot-Zundert of the Netherlands
  • Parents named him after their first son who died at birth
  • Father, Theodorus, was a country minister
  • Mother, Anna,was moody but encouraged Vincent to draw
  • Siblings were Theo, Cor, Elisabeth, Anna, and Willemina
  • Artist was an unhappy child and didn't do well in school
  • Read a lot of books

Van Gogh, the Art Dealer

  • His family fell on hard times, so Vincent quit school and began to work
  • Uncle got him a job selling art in London, where he was successful
  • Spoke 4 languages: Dutch, English, French, and German
  • Regularly visited museums to teach himself about art
  • Began writing to his brother Theo, whom he loved dearly
  • Was very happy until his landlady's daughter turned down his offer of marriage
  • Transferred to Paris, then was fired as an art dealer

1876

Ministering to the Poor

  • Decided to reject worldly influences and turn his life toward God
  • Briefly taught at a Methodist boys' school
  • Tried and failed to pass entrance exams for 2 theology (minister) schools
  • Volunteered to be a missionary in a poor Belgan mining town
  • Sketched what he observed of the lives of poor people
  • Church officials fired him when he was found to be living in squalor

1880

Theo Knows Best

  • With his brother Theo's encouragement, began formal training as an artist

1886

Paris Whirlwind

  • Moved in with brother Theo, who had become an art dealer and Vincent's source of money
  • Theo tried to sell Vincent's work with little success
  • Vincent saw works of--- and met --- Impressionist and Post-Impressionist artists
  • Developed a fondness for Japanese woodcuts
  • Voraciously learned about and discussed art with many well-known artists
  • Painted over 200 canvases during this period

1888

The Yellow House

  • Moved to Arles, France, to escape hectic Paris scene and start art colony
  • Rented a yellow house and invited painter Paul Gauguin to stay with him
  • Created many of his masterpieces during this period
  • Fought with Gauguin and famously cut off part of his own ear
  • Afterwards, Vincent spent time in the Arles hospital and Saint-Remy mental hospital
  • Painted 200 paintings between 1888 and 1890

  • Suffered a gunshot wound on July 27, 1890
  • Historians continue to debate whether it was a suicide attempt
  • Created 2,100 works of art in just over a decade
  • Remembered for his bold use of color and brushwork
  • Sold only one work in his lifetime
  • Brother Theo died a year after Vincent (buried next to him)
