- In order for the building to stay cool during the day, there must be airflow coming through the building.
- In order to achieve this, the architects drew inspiration from termite mounds (Baird).
Termite Mounds
- Termites are able to survive in desert environments because of the way their mounds are constructed.
- The mounds have one large chimney surrounded by many smaller chimneys (Tonn).
- The smaller chimneys heat up quickly which allows for the large chimney to remain cool (Tonn). This allows for the mound to stay cool during the day.

- The building takes inspiration from the termite mounds.
- During the day, cool outside air flows into the building where it is circulated using large fans (Baird).
- At night, those same fans are used to are used to push the hot air back outside (Baird).

- The Eastgate Centre uses 90% less energy than an average building of that size (Tonn).

Personal Interest
As a civil engineering major, one of the topics that is often brought up in class is the environmental impact that our future projects. As an environmentally conscious person, it is something that I think about all the time. I am worried that my future work would be environmentally damaging. After learning about the Eastgate Centre, I have learned that construction does not have to be polluting.
