The Western Cordillera

The Western

Cordillera

  • The western cordillera is located on the west coast of Canada.
  • Made up of the Yukon territories, British Columbia, and western Alberta.
  • This landform region was formed about 80 years ago.

Landform

Landform

  • The mountain belt stretches 800 km wide and it stretches along Canada's pacific coast.
  • The mountains are made up of sedimentary, igenous, and metamorphic rock which were formed by volcanoes.
  • These mountains are called the Rocky mountains and there peaks rise up to about 3,000 m which makes them the highest mountains in Canada.

Climate

Climate

  • The cordillera has fluctuating temperatures that move up and down a lot because of the latitude and different elevations.
  • The percipitation is quite high as there are large bodies of water.
  • Temperatures on the coast tend to be warmer while temperatures are cooler in the south.
  • During the fall and winter the region is very wet. During this time of the year places like Vancouver get around 150 mm of rain. The winters are above freezing which is why there is hardly any snowfall.

Vegetation

  • The vegetation is very diverse in the western cordillera as the climate is always fluctuating.
  • In the moist areas western hemlocks, Douglas Fir, and red cedar grow. Grass and cacti grow on the dry parts of leeward slopes.
  • Close to the ground there are lush healthy plants due to the daily rainful though higher off the ground it is very hard for any plants or trees to survive as it is very icy.

Vegetation

Population

Population

  • The population of the western cordillera is around 10 million.
  • The western cordillera has less then 1% of the worlds population. This area is less populated compared to other areas in Canada because there are a lot of mountains which makes it hard to build roads which makes it hard to get around.

Wildlife

Wildlife

  • Several species have adapted to the harsh climate of the western cordillera such as mountain goats, gyrfalcons, white tailed and willow ptarmigin, water pipit and rosy finch, mule deer, rocky mountain Elk, stoned sheep, grizzly bears, and black bears which are usually found in lush meadow habitats.
