The Evolution of Rap and Hip hop

Where inspiration came from

  • Before rap existed, African village tellers would tell stories while playing music. This was called griots
  • This was brought to American with Africans when they became slaves
  • Early Jamaican and Caribbean rappers got their style from reggae

Roots and Inspiration

Upbringing

  • Rap and Hip Hop emerged from neglected Black and Latino neigborhoods in New York, mainly the Bronx

During the early 70's, the first DJ, DJ Kool Herc started DJing at block parties.

A few years later in 1979, A group called The Sugarhill Gang released their single, "Rapper's Delight."

Many genres of music influenced rap and hip hop including R&B, funk, soul, jazz, rock and roll, and poetry

This was considered the song that began rap

Expansion of the Industry

New rap groups started incorporating other music genres into rap

ex: Walk This Way- Run-DMC ft. Aerosmith

Noteable female artists starting rising, such as Salt 'N Pepa who became the first female rap group.

The rap community started expanding and became rather an ecletic group of people

Record companies started working with new and rising artists such as the Beastie Boys, a white hip hop group.

Uprock dances were where two individuals micmicked eachother's dance moves of hand and body gestures

Krumping is a freestyled dance that usually include jabs, arm swings, chest pops, and stomps.

Run-DMC: and American hip hop/rap group consisting of Joseph Simmons, Darryl McDaniels, & Jason Mizell

Bestie Boys; white American hip hop group consisting of Michael "Mike D" Diamond, Adam "MCA" Yauch, and Adam "Ad-Rock" Horovitz

Public Enemy; American hip hop group consisting of Chuck D, Flavor Fav, Professor Griff, Khari Wynn, DJ Lord, Sammy Sam, and the S1W.

90s-2000s Rap/Hip Hop

There were many types of rap like gangsta rap, G-Funk, The WU, East- West Hip hop War, Pop Rap, and the birth of the Indie Rap.

During the early 2000s there was a lot of undereground rap.

East-Coast,West-Coast Rivalry

East-Coast,West-Coast Rivalry

The rivalry between hip hop/ rap artists and fan from the east coast and west coast started in the mid 90s.

The two biggest points in the rivalry were Los Angeles and New york

Mainstream east-coast artists were The Norotious B.I.G, Wu-Tang Clan, and Puff Daddy

The west-coast smooth "G-Funk" was pioneered by Dr.Dre, Tupac, and Snoop Dogg

The east-coast recordlabel was Bad Boy Records.

The West-coast record label was Death Row Records

2000s rap

Hip Hop remained at the top of the charts.

Classic artists like Jay-Z, 50 Cent, and Dr. Dre remained successful in the music business.

Artists like Missy Elliot, Lil Kim, and Remy Ma started opeing the doors for females in women in hip hop

Eminem was one of the first white performersto dominate hip hop and rap. Some of his most popular songs being "Rap God", "The Real Slimshady", "Lose Yourself"

What's changed

Music has changed a lot from the 90s-the 2010s. Let alone 2000-2010.

Women in rap and hip hop

Some people would like to say men dominate the rap game. But especially over the last 10 years, women have really been making a come up.

Young M.A. is a female rap artist who released one of her most popular songs, "OOOUUU" back in 2016.

Nicki Minaj is a female artist who started out working under other people and released "Pink Friday" as her first solo album in 2010.

Cardi B is a female artist who started working in clubs as a way to make money and escape the struggles of life. She was also on Love and Hip Hop: New York in 2015 and was making music by this time. Her 2017 hit "Bodak Yellow" was her big breakthrough which made her into a bigger image

Beyonce is a hip hop and R&B artists who has been around for some time and has many hit songs. "Lemonade" is her most recent album which was released in 2016.
