Lesson 7-2

Estimating Products

Estimating

To estimate means to find something close to the correct answer.

We can make a number simpler so it is easier to add, but it keeps its value close to what it was. The result is less accurate, but easier to use. Rounding and compatible numbers are two different ways we can estimate.

What is estimating?

Rounding

Remember when rounding, if the number is 5 or greater we round up, if it is 4 or less we round down. Rounding to the nearest ten gives us a more accurate answer.

Example 1: 173 rounded to the nearest ten is 170, because 173 is closer to 170 than to 180.

Example 2: 173 rounded to the nearest hundred is 200 because 173 is closer to 200 than to 100.

Let's try using rounding in multiplication

62 x 105

Round down to 100

62 x 100 = 6,200

(Rounding just 1 number makes out answers more accurate)

Let do another!

203 x 58

11,600

200

_____ x 58 = _______

Compatible numbers

Compatible numbers are just numbers that are easy to use mentally. They can be anything, so long as it is close to the actual value. There are no rules for what number to choose. Different people will have different answers.

Another way (compatible numbers)

47 x 305

Change 47 to 50

Change 305 to 300

50 x 300 = 15,000

Compatible numbers are just numbers that are easy to add!

Example

= 43,806

49 x 894

50 x 900 = 45,000

Let's try one together!

37 x 164

= 6,068

_____ x ______ = ________

They will give you different answers!

Just use whichever one is easiest for you!

Now let's practice!

Let's Go!

Rounding and compatible numbers

Use rounding:

Use compatible numbers:

54 x 115 =

37 x 205 =

43 x 47 =

54 x 115 =

37 x 205 =

43 x 47 =

Round to the nearest ten
