A man named Al-Jahiz was very interested in animals. He even dicected dead rats that he found in the street to examine them. He wrote a book called The Book Of Animals. It was filled with anecdotes, which are short stories, like Aesops fables. There was also lore, or knowledge, about these animals.

Al-Jahiz wasn't the only zoologist in the Islamic empire obviously. He was though, the one who poularized it. Many people followed in his footsteps. For example,Ibn Bakhtishu, who wrote the book Uses For Animals. Or, Al-Damiri in the 14 century who wrote an animal encyclopedia, titled The Lives Of Animals.

How can it be used today?
Zoology can still be used alot today, for there is still so much about animals that we don't know. For example, according to the NOAA ( National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration ) about 95% of the ocean is undiscovered. Think about how many fish there are to discover and document! Marine biology is a form of zoology. it can also be used for finding what a mixed animal is made of, or being a veterinarian.

Veterinarians are doctors for animals. they care for all sick and injured animals, not just your average dog or cat. You most likely have a veterinarian in your city, but they are also in zoos, to care for the sick animals there.

Zoology is a very important and cool science. Animals are a benafit to us, with providing us food, materials, travel. There is still so much that we haven't learned about animals, but thanks to zoology we will be able to learn much more!
