When he was 16, Hillary went on a school trip to Mount Ruapehu. That was when he got interested in mountains.
1939
When he was 20, he climbed his first major mountain. He reached the peak of Mt Oliver in the Canterbury region. It was 6342 feet which is about 1933 meters.
He is enrolled to join the New Zealand Air Force for World War II.
