Computer networks

Definition

Computer network

- A network is a two or more computers or any other electronic deivces connected together so that they exchange data.

- A network allows computers to share files, users to message each other, a whole room of computers to share resources like a printer, scanner etc.

- Network connections are typically created using cables. However, thry can be created using radio signals, telephone lines and satellites

Pros &cons

Pros and cons

Computer network

Pros

Pros

-Files can be transferred easily

-You can connect with other devices

It stores data centrally

Cons

Cons

- Can easily get hacked

- Virus is spread easily

- If the server breaks down, the computer will shut down

Types of networks

Types

There are 5 types of computer networks: Personal area network (PAN), Local area network (LAN), Wireless local area network (WLAN), Metropolitan area network (MAN) and Wide area network (WAN)

Personal Area Netowork (PAN)

Personal Area Netork

- A personal area network (PAN) connects electronic devices within a user's immediate area.

- PAN network connections can either be wired (USB and FireWire)or wireless(Bluetooth, WiFi, IrDA, and Zigbee.)

Pros

Pros

- Less expensive

- Data protection

- Easy to use

- Reliable and stable

- No need additional space

Cons

Cons

- Limited area

- Slow data transmission

- Interfere with radio signals

- Higher expensive devices

Uses

Uses

- Communication among personal devices

- Connecting personal devices to a higher-level network and the Internet

- Short-range communication

- Data transfer within a personal area network.

Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN)

Wireless Local Area Network

- They proved wireless network communications over short distances using radio or infrared signals instead of using cables.

- Access points are connected into a wired which enables wireless stations to connect to a local area network.

Pros

Pros

- Easier to expand the networks

- Safety imporvement and increased flexibility

- Increased chance of interference from external sources

Cons

Cons

- Data is less secured

- Slow rate of data transmission

- Signals can be stopped by thick walls

- Higher cost

Uses

Uses

- Reliable communication

- Versatile communication

- Reduced cost of ownership

- Easier to add or remove workstation

- High rate due to small area coverage

Local Area Network (LAN)

Local Area Network

They are usually within one building or near to each other. It consists of computers and devices connected to hubs or switches which is connected to a router to allow LAN connected to extrenal networks.

Pros

Pros

Network administrator ensuring security

- They allow the sharing of resources such as hardware and software.

- They premit easy communication between users.

- They use a network administrator that ensures security

Cons

Cons

Virus spread across the internet

- Easier spread of viruses

- Queues for shared resources

- Slower access to external networks

- increased security risk

- if main server breaks down, the network will no longer function properly

Uses

Uses

Easy transfer of data and emails

- Provide resource sharing.

- Transfer data and e-mail.

- Improve the reliability of the computer system.

- Connect computers together.

Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)

Metropolitan Area Network

It is a computer network that connects computers within a single large city, multiple cities and towns. It is larger than a local area network (LAN) but smaller than a wide area network (WAN).

Pros

Pros

- Allows users to share their internet connections

- less expensive than WAN.

- has high speed than WAN.

- provides high effiency data transmission.

- Manages data in a central part.

Cons

- Not easily maintained.

- High chance of getting hacked.

- Requires highly trained staff and tools.

- Cannot work in traiditional phone

Uses

Uses

- Connect computer networks across cities

- Build networks with high data connection speeds for cities and towns

- Provide shared network connections

- Interconnect the local area network

Wide Area Network (WAN)

Wide Area Network

They are used where computers or networks are situated a long distance from each other. Its is created when a number of LANs are joined together using a router

Pros

Pros

- Share resources

- Scalability and flexibility

- Cost reduction

- Access to a wide range of services

- Improved security

Cons

Cons

- Increased latency

- Higher cost

- security risks

- slower issues

- complexity

Uses

Uses

- Communicate using voice & video

- Share resources between customers and employees

- Access data storage and remotely back up data

- Connect to applications running in the cloud

- Run and host internal applications

Wired VS Wireless

Wired VS Wireless

Wired and wirless are two methods of connecting devices and transferring data. Wired networks use cables while wireless networks use radio signals.

Wired

WIRED

PROS

CONS

4

1

Cabled networks lose the ability for devices to be mobile

- Uses cables which can produce a more reliable and stable network

5

2

Having lots of wires can lead to hazards, such as tripping, overheating and disconnection of cables

- Data transfer rate tend to be faster

6

3

Less convenient and secure

- Setting up cabled networks tend to be more cheaper.

Wireless

WIRELESS

PROS

CONS

4

1

Data is less secure

Easier to expand the networks

5

2

Data transmission is slower

Gives devices increased mobility

6

3

No cabling, so there is safety improvement and increased flexibility

It is possible for signals to be stopped by thick walls
