Get your ski gear on because the first stop is Whistler! Whistler, British Columbia is known for its amazing ski hills and beautiful winters. Not only are the long and steep hills great, but the breath-taking view while you are going up the gondola and at the top of the hill make it a million times better. There are many options of places to stay and hills to ski on. Whistler Blackcomb, the largest ski resort is where the trip will be going. In 2010, the eyes of the world turned to Whistler Blackcomb as an official venue of the Olympic and Paralympic Winter games ("Mountains of BC: A Ski and Snowboard Paradise"). It is a two hour scenic ride from Vancouver. Blackcomb is often rated the best ski/snowboard resort in North America! The hills run right into Whistler Village, with many great spots for a great après-ski activity!
The next stop is Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. During the day, you will get free time to roam around the town. Yellowknife is the best place in the world to view the aurora borealis, also known as the Northern Lights. With our long and clear winter nights, mid-November to the beginning of April tend to be the best times of the year to visit for a good viewing("Aurora Forecast"). During the night, we will go visit the Northern Lights. One of the most beautiful sightings in the world is the Northern Lights. At night, you can see the Northern Lights from 10 pm to 2am. Your chances of seeing it on a random night are pretty high so look out! In the Northwest Territories, the Northern Lights are visible about 240 nights a year.
Next, we are going to Waiseku, Saskatchewan. Dog sledding is a great way to spend the day! It is when you go on a sled being pulled by several big dogs. Our trip will be going to Sundogs Sled Excursion in Waiseku. You will learn to run a dog team while exploring the southern edge of the largest forest region. The dogs are always so happy and cute! Dog sledding was invented by native and Inuit people in northern Canada. Back then, the sled was led by just one dog pulling a small amount of cargo such as firewood. Now, dog sleds have two to six dogs per sled, which increases the speed, and the fun!
The second last stop, Winnipeg, Manitoba. In the capital of Manitoba, every year, Winnipeg hosts the annual Festival du Voyageur, which is a ten day festival. It is Western Canada's largest winter festival. There are many fun activities to take part in at the festival like watching performances by local artists, a children's playground and massive slide, horse sleigh rides, snowshoeing and enjoying a true Canadian dessert, maple taffy. It is fun for the whole family!
To wrap up the trip and end it off on a bang, we will be going to the capital of Canada. After a long, exciting, activity-packed trip, we will end off with a chill in the city. Ottawa in the winter is an amazing sight. There is so much to do, like shopping, skating on the Rideau Canal, or just going on a scenic walk! Ottawa’s picture-perfect Rideau Canal offers nearly eight kilometres of skating along the naturally frozen canal, usually open January to March ("Top 5 Winter Vacations in Canada"). Taking advantage of everything the city has to offer is so much fun, especially in the winter! There are so many delicious restaurants/ bars (for the parents)! Chilling and laying low in Ottawa is truly the best way to end off the vacation of a lifetime.
