Where do hurricanes form?
- Warm, moist air rises and creates thunderclouds
- The air cools, becoming more dense and falls.
This patterns keeps happening, giving the hurricane its spiral look from above
The most common effects of hurricanes are the strong winds, massive amounts of precipitation, and its thunderstorm-like qualities
The most popular places for hurricanes to be are in usually tropical areas, over water
These places include:
- The Gulf of Mexico and Mexico itself
- Central America
- The South coast of the US (Texas, Florida)
- The coast of Nothern South America (Brazil, Venezuela)
1.) Once in a tropical place, warm air and water vapor need to meet and converge, then rise into the air.
2.) When water vapor turns into water droplets, it releases latent heat into the air and then rises higher in the atmosphere, producing dark thunder clouds.
3.) The Coriolis Effect takes place, thrusting winds to have an an angled spin. This makes step #2 happen on a larger scale, and the speed of rotation increases up to 74 mph or more.
- Charge all electronics that can be helpful
(phones, computers, earbuds, portable chargers, flashlights)
- If you lose power, be prepared with books, games,
or puzzles to keep your kids' minds off the storm
- If your child will easily become scared, try to practice
breathing exercises with them before the storm, or sing songs
with them to ease their nerves.
